China establishes air-defence zone over East China Sea

There's a huge difference between an "air defense identification zone and a "no fly zone". The PLAAF explicitly stated that civilian flights will pass through without consequence and that defensive measures will only be applied if an unidentified flight is detected. Here, it is obvious that the radar knew which aircraft it was (B-52s) and what they were doing (military exercises). So why is there a need for emergency measures?

This response is perfectly routine, and frankly, seeing how Russian Tu-95s enter American zones all the time, it would be unwise to call any of those countries' zones "laughing stock" zones.

Perfectly routine, lol. What happened to identifying aircraft as a rule.B-52 didn't bother and helpless chinese had to sit and watch.Their so called zone being made a mockery of.

Rules are set in place so that they can achieve something. That something can be easily achieved with radar, which was used and successfully tracked and categorized the aircraft.

Not to mention that the US aircraft skimmed the very outer edges of the ADIZ, indicating that the US was also cautious about entering the space.

Why didnt the chinese issue any warnings to the B52s ?

It may bust indian cheerleading run, grownup often ignore temper tantrum of a child. That is exactly how US had been behaving lately and humilating itself in front of the world and China just ignored it. Syria, Egypt and in ASEAN summit all shown how far down US has gone.

Some indians harping about US oil embargo; it is just epic. Where does these indians live? oh wait in mars. China is building oil and gas pipeline from Russia and from all over Central Asia. US pipe dream of sea lane embargo became pipeline and silk road nightmere. Along with it indian importance to play a sentry role in Indian ocean reduced to pure self gloating. India can gurad flock of whales and marine lives for good of the planet.

After US, Japan and SK has sent their planes to violate so called "Chinese air-defense-zone". :omghaha:

South Korea and Japan Send Planes Into China's New Air-Defense Zone - WSJ.com

Can China stop embarrassing itself from all this... i mean making air defense which gets violated the next day in open and then putting tents in others land and then running back or infiltrating in a no-mans- land and writing Chinese on the barren rocks and then again running back.

There is no doubting this is an important week in the rocky history of relations in north Asia and tensions over the disputed islands in the East China Sea.

The turning point came last week when China announced it was establishing an Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), with Japan and the United States quick to react.

Then came Australia. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop called in the Chinese Ambassador for a dressing down and Beijing responded by calling Australia's behaviour irresponsible and mistaken.

Australia's language on China is getting tougher under this Government but arguably so are the strategic circumstances it is dealing with.
From Australia's perspective, China's decision to establish an ADIZ is unhelpful, disturbing and cannot be ignored.

From China's perspective, Australia's intervention and comments are unwarranted and amount to meddling.

The spat comes at a crucial time because tensions in the East China Sea are as high as any moment in the post-cold war era.

"China is not pleased," Professor Jingdong Yuan, a security expert from the University of Sydney, said.

"China does not understand why Australia is taking this stance, as Australia doesn't have a direct involvement in this issue."

Professor Yuan believes Australia's decision to call in the Chinese Ambassador was a step too far and that by taking this position Australia can no longer be seen as impartial.

"It seems Australia is taking sides," he said.

But as far as Australia is concerned China should understand that the timing of its decision is going to be questioned.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute executive director Peter Jennings believes Australia had to say something.

"The application of the ADIZ has not been helpful and is a diplomatic misstep on the part of Chinese," he said.

"They should not be surprised that countries like Japan, US and Australia have made comments that they are going too far.

"It doesn't mean Australia is taking sides.
"Saying nothing would not be conducive to managing a set of troubled relations in the region," Mr Jennings said.

"The move by China was unhelpful and came at the wrong time. It has created a new tension which no one needs right now. Lower key strategies would have been more useful to adopt at this time."

China watching Australia's relationship with 'closest friend' Japan

China is also concerned about Australia's growing closeness to Japan under the leadership of Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

While Labor was in power, relations with Japan took a back seat to a focus on growing ties with China, even though Japan and Australia share a very close strategic and defence relationship.

The Abbott Government has made it clear it wants to strengthen ties with Japan it believes have been left behind in recent years.

It is a delicate repositioning because of existing regional tensions and the Abbott Government emphasises the move will no be at the expense of China, however Beijing is sensitive about the subject and does not see it that way.

At the East Asia Summit meeting in Brunei in October, Mr Abbott, after his meeting with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, described Japan as Australia's "closest friend in Asia".

Immediately China started to take notice.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is due shortly to travel to China. She has already been to Tokyo.

In a Canberra speech in early November, Ms Bishop talked of the need to invigorate the Australian-Japan relationship but emphasized that would not take anything from the relationship with China.

"The relationship with Japan has not had sufficient recognition in recent years as much of the rest of the world shifted focus to China and the extraordinary size and speed of its growth," Ms Bishop said.

"Of course China's rise must be and will be embraced; it is in every nation's interest for China to become even more than it is today.

"However, Australia's friendship with a rising China does not come at the expense of close and longstanding friendships."

There is nothing in these statements for China to complain about, but it is watching Australia to see how this develops.

Australia meantime hopes China understands reinvigorating ties with Japan should not be seen as threatening.

If the Americans didnt encroach first, would the Japs and Koreans do it at all?
The Koreans and Japanese are dogs, Chinese are only wary of their master. A few decades from now, their master would be suffering from Hispanic and black dominance leading to abandoning of Japanese and Korean dogs to the big bad wild.

Right now we cannot fight the Americans.
But neither can the American be dominant in Asia indefinitely or even in the foreseeable future (2-3 decades).

Chinese have VERY long memories.
The Xiong Nu, Mongolians, Manchus eventually paid their debts...

Good Job China. this is exactly peaceful rise! US and Japan did exactly the same thing and they said what they did is peaceful. China just repeat the peaceful thing which US and Japan did. so it is peaceful too.

and only two-faced countries and demons like this guy can say something like Japan eats food to survive is peaceful and other people eat the same food to survive is evil!

And yet they here helping why you guys are making trouble for the world

Australia is a crucial part of the US Pivot to Asia - this is a clear indication that Australia is moving into the SCS dispute as a interested party.
