China assures support to Sri Lanka against "groundless accusations "

Mar 21, Colombo: China says it will continue its support for Sri Lanka's sovereignty and is committed to support Sri Lanka against "groundless accusations" at international fora.

China reiterated its strong support for Sri Lanka when the Vice Chairman of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Mr. Luo Fuhe met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday (March 20).

"We hope we can continue to support each other to promote peace and development. We will try our best to ensure win-win cooperation," the Chinese official told the President.
Sri Lankan President, recalling that mega infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka such as the BMICH, the Supreme Court complex, the Nelum Pokuna Theater, and the Hambantota port and airport were all either gifted or supported by China, conveyed his appreciation for China for its long-time partnership in Sri Lanka's development.

Mr. Fuhe, who attended the opening ceremony of the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) built with Chinese funds, told the President that the opening of the Airport is a good opportunity to send a message of the friendship between China and Sri Lanka.

Adding that China is interested in exploring new sectors for future projects, the Chinese official has said China now wants to focus on potential new projects in the health, education and cultural sectors for the wellbeing of the Sri Lankan people.

He has thanked Sri Lanka for its support to China in the international arena and President in return has assured the Vice Chairman of Sri Lanka's support for China's policies.

China's Ambassador in Sri Lanka Mr. Wu Jianghao, Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris, Senior Minister of Scientific Affairs Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama, Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing & Common Amenities Mr. Wimal Weerawansa, Secretary to the President Mr. Lalith Weeratunga and Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Mr. Karunatilaka Amunugama joined the meeting.

There is no need for Sri Lankans to fly of the handle as India will have to take the feelings of Tamils in India in any decision it takes.
All know where the LTTE was getting its support from India realized its mistake and withdrew any sympathy or support for the rebels and put its navy on guard so that the supply routes could be cut. All Sri Lankans know this we should have done this long back. Once war is over now you should respect the human rights and go all out for the settlement of this affected people to silence any critics. India will never have relations with Sri Lanka against the feelings of people of Tamil Naidu.
Sri Lanka instead of jumping back and forth from lap of China to Pakistan and back should react pragmatically understand Indian compulsions and give time and space to Indian government to get all concerned on board. Out smarting each other is not a wise thing to do in diplomacy and statesmanship. There were others who voted against Sri Lanka but did you react to them no coz no one cares. India would have liked to support you as anyone else but for that you have to take some actions on ground to alleviate the pain and misery of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
I am sure you guys will not become tools in hands of others trying to rub India on the wrong side as the old saying goes when Elephants make love or war the grass in always trampled.

They bowed to DMK pressure. If they were going to vote in any case, they could have kept DMK and all these protests at low level, while important bills regarding entire India and for national interest can be addressed.

Foreign Policy depends on years and years of prediction and planning. Everything is undone if some mistake is made. Look at Congress's decisions during their rule.

Congress handed over Sri Lanka to China. We can no longer ask Sri Lanka to address our security concerns if China increases its influence in Sri Lanka.

good on China , India is BIG regional bully, thanks to China now India cant exert its muscles on its weak neighbours. China is never a aggressor or promoter of regional terrorism like India as we know its was India that armed and trained LTTE to de-stabalise Sri Lanka

I know. But can you invade them ? Along with diplomacy, economic connections is the best way to keep them pro-India. One can't latch on to past, rather learn from it.

sri lanka supported china in 1962 war......sri lanka supports china now.....and sri lanka will support china in the future......everything is same....i dont see any diplomacy or benefits that accrued to us.......

Yes we encouraged LTTE and it was a wrong decision but we did take corrective action when we realized our mistake.

Don't comment on DMK coz you don't know how a multi-party democracy works...look poor Obama can't have anything passed coz of republicans. So don't go where you are not qualified to comment.

No one is a regional bully same is the case with Japan, Tibet, Vietnam, Taiwan and same is true in case of USA and Cuba, Panama. When you have a big nation state around the smaller states like Pakistan, China, Bangladesh feels threatened. The big state has to go that extra mile to put its smaller neighbor at ease and address their concerns.

So please don't try to fish in troubled waters.
