Chile backs India, Brazil's UNSC bid | Business Line

Washington, Oct 5:

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has supported India, Brazil, Germany and Japan’s bid for a permanent seat in UNSC.

“I think that countries like Brazil, Germany, Japan, India should be part of the Security Council as permanent members,” Pinera told the popular Charlie Rose Show in an interview on the PBS.

The current five permanent members of the UN Security Council — the US, Britain, France, China and Russia —— have veto and the inclusion of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan would increase the number to nine, he said.

“Without veto power, of course, because I think that we should try to get rid of the veto power and establish maybe some quorum or super-majority to take the biggest decisions,” Pinera said in response to a question.

So without veto power?

Isn't that kind of against the point?

Veto power was a US master plan. It allowed them to use force whenever and wherever they like without worrying about a global alliance against it and the major powers of the 40's fell to it.

I think there will be no change in the Per. U.N. club. There will only be 5 members and that's it. No more new members to stir problems worldwide. So India's wet dream of joining the Big Boy's Club is DASHED !!!

No, the US master plan was called full spectrum domination.

Veto doesn't mean anything to a power that acts "unilaterally", such as the US Invasion of Iraq, or the Russian invasion of Georgia.

Nobody cares what the UNSC thinks if they really want to go to war. Hell, China fought against the entire United Nations during the Korean War. Against the combined armies of the US + 16 of her allies, and forced them into the longest retreat in the history of the American armed forces. We pushed them out of North Korea and kept them out for the next half century.

There is no substitute for Comprehensive National Power.

And America rules the waves, by having the most power. That's all.

With more than 120 countries supporting India for a permanent seat in UNSC and only one country opposing it. Indians can not only dream but also see their dream accomplished.

Yes. But imagine a scenario where a UNSC condemns US invasion of a country or fights US. We wouldn't have seen such domination by the US military.

Sure you can have it, but as the President in the article said... "Without veto power, of course."

Nobody wants to do that, because countries care about their own national interests first and foremost.

Same reason why America didn't stop Russia from invading Georgia, and why America didn't stop North Korea from repeatedly attacking their close ally South Korea. At the end of the day, countries only care about themselves, that is the reality of global politics.

You can get martian from Mars to support India too, all it takes is one veto from any of the P5 members and you're out.
Any changes to P5 will require green light from all P5 members. It ain't gonna happen.

Sure you can have it, but as the President in the article said... "Without veto power, of course."

But you see getting membership without Veto power is step #1 then step #2 will be lobby for Veto power.

and unfortunately that country is not china, but pakistan. As far as china is concerned. take this:

China backs India's aspiration for greater role in UN - World - DNA

What China said was just Lip Service for India .....it is actually USA that does not what any change in the current Per. U.N. body !

India went on record saying that it doesn't require a veto power. and thats the reason for the support of majority of nations.

can any one tell me on what basis were unsc permanent members were choosen

No country says anything just for lip service. India has already been a member of UNSC for the past two years (and for many years in the past).

What harm did it do to China? Nothing.
