Chances of Kiyani getting extension are very slim, as dirty games would be again played as per our past democratic traditions, to try to get a COAS of own choice.

PPP, especially Zardari would like to get his own man in, as he is in trouble and his last resort to cling to the seat would be through Army (which i even doubt), as Army itself wants him out.

Hopefully, Zardari would be gone by end of this year, as no one wants him to be on the seat.

Well there isn't any whom he came in contact before he came to the seat, but after his rise to this seat, he has tried to get in touch with a few, but nothing can be said for sure as for now.

Problem is, some good senior generals are gonna retire this year, Pasha, Kiyani, Masood (already on extension), Nadeem (if extensions not given), so a lot of space would be there to promote from junior ones.

But do hope, Kiyani must have made the necessary arrangement or will do, so that no favorite is selected by the Oligarchs.

Will try to get the names and let you know.

Chief of Army Staff calls on PM

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP): Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani here at the PM House on Saturday evening.

The Army Chief briefed the Prime Minister about his meetings with top officers of NATO in Brussels regarding new international strategy in Afghanistan.Chiefs of military staff from more than sixty countries attended the meeting at NATO Headquarters.

The Army Chief also briefed the Prime Minister about the on-going security forces operation in the South Waziristan.

Overall national security situation also came under discussion in the meeting.

The Prime Minister praised the valor of soldiers and personnel of other law enforcing agencies who laid their lives for national cause. He said that the nation is proud of its security forces who are striving for restoration of peace in the terror affected areas.

according to DAWN, CoAS Gen.Kiyani has this afternoon given a press conference to local and foreign journalists on Afghanistan and PK's role.

he has again reiterated that this war is 'Pakistan's War'!

Rawalpindi - February 1, 2010: “Pakistan has suffered the maximum in terms of human and economic losses due to terrorism and violent extremism, but it has not dented the resolve of the nation and its armed forces to fight and finish the terrorism in accordance with own national interests.” This was stated by COAS, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, while talking to a group of foreign correspondents on his return from Brussels, where he had gone to attend the conference of NATO commanders on a special invitation.

COAS said that he has conveyed the concerns, challenges, contributions and constraints of Pakistan in its fight against the terrorists. He said that he had high lighted the key issues of the conflict that needed to be fully understood and addressed. He drew the attention of the forum towards the huge sacrifices made by the people of Pakistan and its armed forces, due to the effect of ‘Blow Back’.

While referring to Afghanistan, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said that our objective is to have peaceful, stable and friendly Afghanistan. “We cannot wish for Afghanistan anything that we don’t wish for Pakistan”. He reaffirmed that geography, culture and history can neither be separated nor wished away. He emphasized that our operations in 2009 have helped improving situation in Afghanistan in terms of squeezing of spaces, better control of areas and continuous logistic flow.

COAS identified five fundamentals that helped in turning the tide and must not be lost sight for future operations. These are: public opinion, media support, army’s capability and resolve, ‘our war’ was not ‘US war’ and a comprehensive strategy based on four different phases namely clear, hold, build and transfer. For the way forward, he said that, the fundamentals should remain strong and intact, short and long term interests be reconciled, strategic direction should be maintained and coordination be effect based.

He informed the NATO commanders that our strategic paradigm needs to be fully realized. He said we are the second largest Muslim nation in the World located in a strategic region defined by competing interests and civilizational cross roads, with a prolonged history of conflict. We have 3 million Afghan refugees. At present, our operations are in a transitory phase (from hold to build), we must consolidate our gains and fully stabilize the areas secured, lest it falls back to terrorists. Constraints of capability to absorb and operate, limited cutting edge counter intelligence / counter terrorism capability and limited budgetary space should be factored in.

In his concluding remarks, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said that Pakistan has contributed to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan. We have the will and resolve to overcome the menace of terrorism in our country and we have the public support. We have also offered to train ANA and ANP, as we have the capacity and wherewithal to do so. He reiterated that Pakistan should be trusted and enabled.

The briefing was followed by an interactive Q and A session.

Here are some possible ones in my opinion:

Lt Gen Muhammad Masood Aslam SJ, Punjab — Commander, XI Corps, Peshawar. (Colonel Commandant of the Punjab Regiment)

Lt Gen Tahir Mahmood SBt, Punjab[1] — Commander, X Corps, Rawalpindi.

Lt Gen Shahid Iqbal, Baloch[1] — Commander, V Corps, Karachi.

Lt Gen Khalid Nawaz Khan, Baloch[4] — Commandant, Command and Staff College (Comdt C&SC), Quetta. (Not sure if he has ever commanded any corps)

Lt Gen Ayyaz Salim Rana, AC[1] — Chairman, Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT), Taxila. (Not sure if he has ever commanded any corps but the minister of defence production might have established a working relationship with him - Minister of defence production is Mr. Jatoi from Corruption peh HAMARA Haq hey episode.)

General Masood is already on extension, his retirement date has passed, was given a 1 year extension to continue due to his command of the operations in FATA & PATA.

Gen Pasha would have been a good choice, but alas he is reaching his 60 years limit. His service years is still not full, but he is going to retire due to his age limit. As in Armed forces it is whatever comes first, either you are reaching the age limit of 60 or your service years as per rank. Pasha's bad luck that he is reaching 60. :(

He has experience of leading troops in the FATA operations, then the ISI position would have helped him a lot.

Next chief is anyone's guess, as this time politics is gonna play its role unfortunately.

The current Corps Commander Rwp, the ex-SSG commander is also a good candidate.

IMO by looking at current situation and the role of ISI...I support Gen Pasha...but he is turning 60..too bad

Lt Gen Mustafa Khan.

what is his background - infantry, armour, artillery etc? - has he commanded at corps level? - what is his seniority level compared to the names mentioned above?

could be the 'sleeper' candidate!
