what do you mean? I too am pessimistic about this idea, purely because in the end i fear akp is going to use this move as a way to increase religious influence and promote/brainwash children into thinking that Turkey should strive for the Ottoman time and mentality (aka more emphasis on being muslim brothers with ME). let's hope that is not going to be the case.

I can read Ottoman Turkish whereas @xenon54 @Sinan and @T-123456 can't !

I think its not the script but the language thats being mandatory, so you will understand as much as now.

Exactly that is the case,hoping it wont happen will not be enough..
Via Imam Hatips at first after some influence,the whole education system.
Just like they did with the Armed forces,politics,Judiciary etc slow but permanent changes.

Mate...nobody will learn our history from ancient texts which are only available in museums....at best people will be able to read the tombstone of their grand-grandfather....

And how can they do it mandatory....who will teach Ottoman language to millions of students. I don't think this project will come in to life..I think he is diverting public opinion....something is bound to be happen or something happened and we didn't hear yet.

More on the topic... there is no such thing as Ottoman Turkish. It is just Turkish with excessive words from Arabic.

Only history and religion students should learn Ottoman Turkish. Turkey must limit Arab influence. It decays the mind.

we dont need ottoman language.. since it was not a common language the folk didnt speak it just the higher ones..

Its a good thing if we could understand it.. But still I am more pragmatic and would prefer a real turkish wich is understandable with azeri turkmen kazakh kirgiz and uzbek

Problem is a dead alphabet and language being compulsory to everyone.

Of course I can't read it, because its a chaotic language impossible for a simple Turkish speaker to fully understand, Ottoman Turkish is pretty much developed in the same way as how some so called "Intellectuals" today keep using English words in their talking because they think its cool.

I can read the modernized versions of old writtings though, which is more then enough, I'm not an historian or an Ottoman literature specialist.

Then you should learn Ottoman Turkish and Arabic script to read it since you have an interest for it. Normal person doesn't need Arabified Turkish since Ottomans don't have any significant literature. It is the harsh truth but the truth.

Ottomans only written down this: which sultan slept with who. Which sultan took which wife. How many children did they have. Etc, etc. There are no great works of Ottoman literature. If you learn it, you learn it out of a personal interests. Name me 5 important authors of Ottoman Turkish language? There is none. We don't have writers like a Goethe, Tolstoy or Dostoevsky.

We changed Arabic script to latin script and look how many writers we have today. IMHO, it would make more sense to learn If you learn Arabified Turkish you should do it as a hobby. Or if you are historian in Turkey. You must learn Ottoman Turkish. Otherwise pretty useless language.

Also Ottomans liked to write in Persian while Safavids liked to write in Turkish. If you want to read Ottoman, you should also learn Farsi.

the change of arabic to latin was not well planned is was just do it and live with it.. there was no need for it.. in computer days today you can say latin alphabet is good but at that time there was no need for.. if we would have used the arabic alphabet then we could read the quran too this is something that was considered as bad.. that is the biggest reason to change the alphabet

some things that happend was just about of ignorant hate for religion and arabs culture..

if we go your way than we will have to learn our history from others.. that means some british could come to us to teach us their opinion of our history.. we need our own pll teaching the world our history..

for me I would teach the language for those who want to learn it.. that means its optional and would be provided after some years so normal turkish can be teached well for children.. that would be a great thing so we would have many ppl who could speak old ottoman turkish and translate historical writings.. it also should not be just ottoman language in the lessons it should be combined with art that would make the biggest benefit we could get from such a thing..

what really makes me angry is that we have ppl who are sensitiv for ottoman culture and ottoman history in turkey.. they call ottomans barbars just like our enemys the greeks and specially armenians.. for me those ppl are greeks or armenians or mix of them..

History students in Turkey at the moment are not obliged to learn Ottoman Turkish which is weird. How can they read Ottoman archives? They can't. They are relying on third party sources. I agree that history students should be obliged to learn Ottoman Turkish but normal student doesn't need to learn it. It is useless. Ottoman Turkish doesn't have any literature.

Well, he would try to "islamize" Turkey day after day with new plans and he would succeed. That's the sad truth. Also, Turkish society is getting more divided, and polarized. The bigger chunk are attracted to islamists(AKP), the lesser chunk to CHP, and MHP. That was proved to me with the recent election. It's another sad point.

I was reading some excerpts from Ottoman Turkish; I understood quite a few words from it. Maybe because it has a lot of Persian and Arabic loanwords and Urdu - our national language - has a lot of Turkish, Persian and Arabic loanwords !

I didn't understand a single word of the couple of sentences in Modern Turkish that I tried to read !
