A team representing Canadian Parliament separately met Speaker Abdul Hamid and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday.
The Speaker highlighted the importance of BNPs joining of Parliament to play a constructive role. The party has been boycotting Parliament for long.
In a press statement, the Parliament Secretariat said that Senator Nancy Ruth and Senator SB Jaffer were among the representatives who visited the Speakers office.
The Senators urged the Speaker to discuss the current political situation in the country.
We believe in democracy. So Parliament is the centre of all our activities, the statement quoted Hamid as telling the Senators. The people and democracy would benefit if the main opposition party joins Parliament and raises issues.
Mentioning the Westminister form of democracy in Britain, Hamid said an effective opposition partys role in Parliament should not be based on numbers of representatives, but on their sheer status as opposition.
Meeting With Khaleda
The six-member team of representatives of the Canadian Parliament also met opposition chief Khaleda Zia on Tuesday night.
The meeting that lasted for an hour began at the BNP Chairpersons Gulshan office at 8pm.
Senator Russ Hiebert led the team.
The other members are Senators Mobina Jaffer, Nancy Ruth, Jinny Sims, Ed. Holder, Elizabeth Kingston and Canadas envoy to Dhaka Heather Cruden.
Their meeting is said to have discussed issues related to two countries.
