Can Indian cinema go global?

Remi Award? What's that? I'm talking about Golden Palm, Golden Lion, Golden Bear and the Oscar - not some third tier award that nobody knows outside the region.

It is popular with brown people. Bangladesh, pakistan, afghnistan, malaysia, middle east all like indian movies. I would say its quite a global brand.

White folks seem to like South American and East Asian movies though.

I have never seen any Indian movies shown here in Germany. Neither in the mainstream cinemas nor in art house cinemas.

German mainstream cinemas show lots of Hollywood as well as European big budget productions. Art house cinemas are showing more small production movies with an artistic, esthetic and intellectual content. Most movies coming outside of the "western" cultural sphere are shown here, e.g. Chinese, South American, Iranian or Eastern European movies.

I'm just wondering about the Bollywood hype and being global from Indian forumers but have yet to see an Indian movie winning one of the major film festival awards and screened here in my favourite art house movie theatre.

I think you need to do some research. First of All Indian movies have market in South Asia, Middle East, US,UK and Canada, Japan and S-E Asia. I don't know about non-English speaking countries like Germany and Russia. Its not a hype because if Germans don't see our movies doesn't mean it is useless.

Also can you clarify about Chinese movies because as far I know its Hongkong film industry( mainly Kung Fu movies) that are famous throughout the world and Mainland Chinese movies still don't have much presence across the world.

i do beleive some bollywood movies are really fantastic...!!the low budget movies if anyone watches are really awesome!!but when high budget segment comes..the directors are mostly interested in reaping profits by adding item numbers and casting bollywood stars rather than focusing on its content and other aspects!!but its not their fault ..nor does it signifies that they lack the talent..its just the need of the hour thats driving these directors to direct such kind of films...!!audience here needs love romance masala and entertainment!!!thats all they want and thats what they are getting it..!!!and as far as awards are concerned ...i have seen better bollwood movies than slumdog millionaire ..but still that movie got awards..!!dont know why?

I live in Europe and travel a lot within Europe and outside as well. I have yet to see an Indian movie hitting mainstream in any European country like "Raise the red Lantern", "Tuya's Marriage", "Hero". All of the mentioned movies are from the Mainland.

Also nowaday, most Chinese movies are in co-operaton between the Mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan.

Titles like "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "House of Flying Daggers", "Infernal Affairs", "Chinese Ghost Story", "In the Mood of Love", "Chunking Express" and many, many more have already become classic movies in Europe and many other parts of the world.

Brother its all about marketing and promotion. Bollywood has a massive market in India hence its never been a great desire to be global. When audiences are enlightened whats coming out they will without doubt appreciate it. The other day Sholay was shown on UK terrestrial tv again and for the first time my nephews and nieces watched it. They found it awesome!

Well I observed that Mainland Chinese abandoned their classical Chinese music, it is only visible in Hong Kong based movies. I met many Chinese guys, they told me nobody listen to classical Chinese music in China. In India the classical music(Hindustani and Carnatic Musics) and various folk music are still highly used by Bollywood and they are too much successful in preserving it.

Anyway, the names of movies you mentioned I only heard of "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". In India, people mostly see Hongkong based Kung-fu movies otherwise we could not find any good story in Chinese movies apart from Kung-Fu.

yep...u r right buddy!!bud i do prefer hollywood over bollywood in general!!

Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis are spreading all over the world. Afghans, Melanesian, and many from Arab countries are also bollywood watchers. So we will be in big league after some time. Anil Ambani has done a 12 film deal with Steven Spielberg is one step towards that.I am biggest fan of Steven Spielberg.

You are right. There are many Indian movies which recovered three times of their production cost just in a Single week across India.

Would like to disagree with you here dost. Definatly marketing is important. But most important thing is the story , the script. Just look at Iranian Cinema, Korean cinema or Korean cinema. They are popular worldwide just coz amazing scripts and unique concepts. Though not denying role of marketing.

Yaar - what kind of script was for example "3 idiots"? - On paper looked boring. At the cinema its the only film i ever watched twice! There are some great scripts in bollywood but what you have to look at is the desired audiance. I watch certain films just to be entertained and thats what i get with stuff like "Singh is King! If i wanted to watch a film with a serious script i wouldnt pick that one. I want to smile and entertained and laugh. In a real world there is enough cr*p so i dont want anymore!!!
