Egypt has signed an agreement to acquire two German-built Type 209 attack submarines, according to an announcement Friday by the new head of the Egyptian Navy, Osama Ahmed el-Gendy.

“Egypt will not allow anyone to enter its territorial waters,” el-Gendy said in his first public statement since taking office. ”Our Navy is in good condition, and at the highest level of operational readiness.”

El-Gendy also said that four US-built FMC missile ships would join the Egyptian fleet in 2013.

Although there might be more option but they should look towards JV with them or at least producing 7 of the selected one at HOME.

USA,UK and Germany will not allow Egypt to full its military inventory with Russian products.

On other hand among our defence companies many projects are active right now for the aim of making our own diesel-electric submarines(German types of course) within 5 to 10 years.Who knows maybe some day we can provide Egypt with submarines :P

china would the substitution:P

Egypt should invest in heavy industries like steel, shipbuilding, pertochemicals, contrcution machinery etc and so should the GCC and KSA. Why don't the Turks, KSA and egypt have a joint programme on Submarine development. Strategically they are very close and have mutual interest in the region. Its time the M.E move up the technological ladder.

SA? A big no no if it was up to me. Wahabi oil money is dangerous and your nation is dragging in your sectarian conflicts. A secular Iran is a far better choice.

Germany FM: Israel's interests will be considered before inking Egypt arms deal
Germany’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Guido Westerwelle says during a news briefing in Jerusalem that a nuclear-armed Iran 'is not an option.'
By Barak Ravid | Sep.09, 2012 | 5:11 PM |

“Germany will acknowledge Israel’s security interests when making a decision regarding a submarine deal with Egypt,” Germany’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Guido Westerwelle said during a news briefing in Jerusalem on Sunday.

Westerwelle was commenting on reports in Egypt claiming that a contract had been signed for the sale of two German submarines to the Egyptian navy. The deal has not yet received final approval from the German government. According to reports in the German press, Israel has protested the move and asked Germany to cancel the deal.

Westerwelle was speaking to German journalists after conferring with Defense Minister Ehud Barak at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. The meeting with Barak dealt with three main subjects: the Iranian nuclear program, the political stalemate with the Palestinians and German arm sales to Arab countries.

Israel is interested in reaching an arrangement on the problem of German arms sales to Arab countries as well as coming to understandings that would preserve Israel’s qualitative edge, as reported in Haaretz earlier on Sunday. Similar understandings exist between Israel and the United States.

At the start of the meeting with Barak, Westerwelle expressed his reservations about a military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. “We will keep up sanctions and diplomatic pressure on Iran. We still see room for diplomacy. We urgently call on Iran to enter into substantial negotiations,” he said.

“A nuclear-armed Iran would pose a threat not only to Israel but to the stability of the entire region. A nuclear-armed Iran is not an option,” he added.

Westerwelle will meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday night.

Barak said at the meeting that Israel appreciates the German position concerning Iran and tried to downplay the differences between the two nations concerning arms sales. “The military cooperation between the two governments is excellent and is reflected, among other things, by the contract concerning the sale of a sixth submarine [to Israel],” he noted.

“Our ties with Germany stretch back many years and are based on a basic belief in democracy, values and remembrance, and we deeply appreciate this friendship,” Barak said.

Because of the immediate need.

By the way the U-214 is one notch above the U-209 only in fuel cell technology which can be installed on the latter too like the Portuguese U-209 upgraded to U-214 standard, and it is cheaper.
Turkey is making the U-214 along with Germany, so if you compare the actual state of finances between turkey and Egypt you'll have a good answer to your question.
Soon Egypt will be making its own weapon systems. they are already making the Abram's advanced versions locally with almost 90% local production, so the future is bright for Egypt.

I know that there isn't a big difference so why not 7 U-214E and Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Algeria join in the Germans of their NG Submarine Program.
