That was in Afghanistan, look at that area, now compare it with FATA, probably a 1000 times smaller, yet we have 120,000 troops there, plus, 30-35 % of the army is Pushtun, we have Frontier Corps (FATA tribsemen are recruited into this paramilitary), thus they are sons of the soil, know local area, culture and language, thus we have this advantage over the americans and russians, who were completely alien to the locals
