An Afghan consulate official was fatally shot by a private security guard in Karachi's Old Clifton area on Monday.
The guard, Hayatullah, opened fire on the third secretary, Zaki Adu, in the lobby of the consulate after a personal disagreement arose between the two men, according to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Azad Khan.

Hayatullah, an Afghan national, was taken into custody following the incident and the situation is said to be under control. The DIG said the incident did not appear to be an act of terrorism.
Following the incident, police and Rangers had cordoned off the highly sensitive area which is home to a number of foreign missions.
"We are collecting evidence and will obtain CCTV footage in order to investigate the incident," the DIG said, adding that the consulate had been cleared.

KARACHI: At least one person was killed as unidentified armed men on Monday opened fire near the Afghan Consulate in Karachi’s Clifton area,
Express News reported.
Police sources said Muhammad Zaki, a senior consulate official, was killed in the gunfire, however, they refused to provide any further details. “Afghan third-Secretary has been killed in the firing,” SSP South was quoted as saying.

The police official further said consulate security guard Rahatullah, deputed inside the building, opened fire which killed the Afghan diplomat. He said the guard, who hails from Afghanistan, has been taken into custody.

Meanwhile, heavy contingents of Rangers and police arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area for further investigations.
The incident came in wake of several politicians and parliamentarians were planning to visit Kabul in a bid to reduce tensions between the two neighbouring states. Members of the Pak-Afghan parliamentary group asked National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to invite his Afghan counterpart to Pakistan.
