Lahore’s shrine bombed – outrageous, barbaric and unacceptable

As if the recent acts of violence and an atmosphere of fear was not enough, the butchers have attacked Lahore’s oldest and grandest shrine – also known as Data Saheb. Thursday night is the time when thousands visit this shrine to pray and offer their respects to Hazrat Usman Hajwery, a Sufi who has been known as the protector of the city and the generous guide who is believed to have blessed countless generations.

This is a barbaric attack and should serve as a wake up call. Data Saheb’s shrine is not just another crowded place – it represents a millenia of tolerant Sufi Islam which is directly under attack by the puritans.Last year, there were threats and the government had closed the place for a day or two. This time the worst of nightmares has come true.

How long will we be mere spectators and see our great city blown to bits – culturally and physically. This is time for hard, concrete action and a major crackdown on all terrorist outfits that are operating in the country especially the Punjab wit impunity.

How long shall we remain in a state of denial – as if there is no problem within Pakistan and all acts of terror are perpeterated by the Indians, Jews and the Americans.

Here’s the latest report:

LAHORE: At least 18 people were killed when three suicide blasts struck Data Darbar in Lahore on Thursday.

According to police officials, the death toll was still unconfirmed, however, authorities stated that more than 100 people were injured.

The Data Darbar shrine is situated in the center of the city and according to police reports, a large number of people were present in the vicinity during the blasts.

Most of the injured were shifted to Mayo Hospital, where an emergency has been declared. Local televisions reported that some of the victims had also been taken to Services Hospital and Mehran Hospital.

Thursday is a popular day at the shrine where crowds gather at night. Police officials said that the large number of people could have been the reason why the bombers managed to get through, despite the heightened security.

There is no single version of Shariah which is recognized by all Muslim. Shariah is simply the interpretation. By whom and how the Quran is interpreted is the main issue. Moreover, you can not impose any law which will be in conflict with existing charters where Pakistan as a state is a signatory. Pakistan has it's international obligation to abide by all international treaties it has ratified so far. Violation will only bring isolation and Pakistan will suffer the same fate as Talibanistan did. Keep religion in it's own space which is no further than your own personal house. A state can not be run on the basis of Religion or magic spells.

What's even more disgusting it that if there were no 4 witness then the women would get punishment and then Pakistanis say we have much lower rape rate then Western and that Saudi has lowest crime rate (Who in his right mind would want to report crimes with these laws?)

There is nothing here you can clarify - the legalized discrimination and denial of rights under the excuse of 'Shariah' is not a fact you can refute. There is a long history of religion, Islam or otherwise, being misused to oppress the people by those in power. Dreams about a 'Shariah Utopia' are not going to change that reality since you cannot change the nature of human beings. That nature is to grab power and cling to it and impose their POV on others. Religion based government gives people in power way too much leeway in accomplishing their nefarious goals - that is clear from what is happening in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and what the Taliban did and are doing.

It is wrong to say it like that. The FSC had declared even in '86 that non-conviction of Zina bil Jabr liable to Hadd should not mean prosecution of the female for Zina liable to Tazir. In most of the cases, the lower judiciary being incompetent passed the decision and they were then mostly corrected by the higher courts (though there were infamous decisions by the higher courts themselves as well).

But, the female ended up spending months, if not years, incarcerated for these charges.

I cannot thank the previous government enough for the amendments. Now the Qazf trial of the accuser is bound to be started automatically if the zina charges cannot be proved.

There is no single version of Shariah which is recognized by all Muslim. Shariah is simply the interpretation.

Had this mullah and petrodollar Wahabist crowd been living in the 8th century, there would have been no schools of thought either. They would have bulldozed over the scholars trying to interpret it, the same way they block any attempts at interpreting it today. Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ), Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) and Al-Qaeda linked organisations are paid killers.

as a non Pakistani I see two problems, one which everybody is talking about. Its something that will take time and effort to evolve, but the one thing that alarms me the most is the ease at which such acts happen. I mean there have been so many such acts and countless people killed, what is the Pakistani intelligence and police up to? we all know Its difficult, but seeing the number of times such things are happening, the police and the anti terror units need to pull up their socks!!!
