The terrible aftermath of the Rawalpindi carnage is now before us. Among the 40 dead are children and the elderly. Devastated families organise funerals and try to find ways to cope with their grief. They will, like the thousands of other victims of terror, never fully recover from death that took place so mercilessly and with so little reason. It is of course ironic that the killing took place during Friday prayers – marring an occasion that is most sacred to Muslims. The men behind it clearly have no faith, no morals and no humanity. Yet, despite this, condemnation from our religious leaders has been muffled. We have not heard the kind of outcry that would be expected. Such acts of course can never be condoned. We should all ask ourselves what we can do to protest against them more strongly and urge all those with any kind of influence in society to do the same. We have heard too from people who insist that 'agents' linked to RAW carried out the act. They base their reasoning on the argument that no Muslim would carry out such pure evil. This thinking is flawed. The premise on which it is based has proven to be false again and again. The killers, who grabbed people by their hair, shot them at close range while they still stood on prayer-mats and hurled grenades into the rows of worshippers, come from among us. There is every reason to believe they are not Muslim – on the basis that no true believer would be capable of such brutality, for Islam preaches tolerance and peace and love for all. But they are not outsiders planted by enemies. This is a reality we need to accept so that we can combat it.

There is now a growing sense that the militants may have links to the security apparatus. There have been unconfirmed reports that former police or army personnel could be involved. This is something that needs to be examined in some depth. It is possible that the brainwashing that in the past used 'jihad' as a motive has somehow become distorted and is now being used against the state of Pakistan. Over the past years we have seen many terrible scenes of death. The time has come to contemplate what can be done to ensure a better future. We must consider a programme to de-brainwash the affected. We must reach into madressahs and consider what is happening there. The issues of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and frustration must be addressed. These are giant ones and cannot be tackled overnight. The question is whether our government has the ability, the competence and the will to chalk out a plan to solve these problems and, by doing so, raise the hope that we can escape the violence that has overwhelmed us.

The issues of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and frustration must be addressed. These are giant ones and cannot be tackled overnight.

A nation were honesty is concerned as being dumb and every body is busy worshiping money only, no problems can’t be solved.

I love French revolution as it didn't had religion involved in it but only hunger of people to get their rights from the rich class.

We need honest people who can solve poverty, illiteracy and unemployment issues.

I will never know what’s the limit of money is why more more and more? some time I think money is evil and that evil is killing Pakistani society.

When we come to west it takes years to take class system out of us.

I like Pak Army because General Musa Khan Hazaraand and General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani even being son of non warrant officers can be the army chief but in civil I have not seen such examples.

RAWALPINDI: Teams investigating Friday’s attack on the Parade Lane mosque have picked up at least six people, including the last registered owner of the car allegedly used by militants for travelling from the NWFP to Rawalpindi.

Regional police officer Mohammad Aslam Khan Tareen confirmed on Saturday that five to six suspects had been detained in connection with the incident in which 40 people were killed.

Amid extraordinary security measures, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and top military officials joined hundreds of friends, colleagues and family members at funerals of those killed in the attack.

Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said that such acts of cowardice would not dent the resolve of the armed forces and the nation to fight terrorism.

Mohammad Imran, the last registered owner of the car, was picked up from his house in Islamabad’s Sector G-11.

A security official said Imran had sold the car in 2004. It was later resold to five other parties on 'open transfer letters'.

A source said the investigators had recovered a telephone set from the car which helped them to trace last calls made by the terrorists. One such call was made to Mir Ali, in South Waziristan, and the other to one in Afghanistan.

In Lahore, Lt-Col Fakharul Hasan and his two sons — flying officer Minhajul Hasan and 12-year-old Saadul Hasan — who lost their lives in the attack were buried at the army’s Cavalry Ground graveyard on Saturday with full military honour.

through the same undisclosed sources they are still offering cease-fire.

pakistan needs to fight extremists with full force. These extremists are grower stronger and bolder by the day. Better intelligence and police setup is required right now.
Any idea if police intelligence against extremists is been ramped up ? btw why isn't the US helping Pakistan to gather intelligence to save you from these attacks ? They seem to have a selective network of CIA etc. inside Pak and Afghanistan - no helping Pak police with intelligence if the attack is on Pakistanis.

this is not the quote that i was alluding to. this thing came about after 2-3 months after mumbai when there was talk in the indian media about 'surgical' attacks. i can assure you i came across it (maybe on tv) .

Yes stop the operations; establish a sharia state and then fight against India. You know the history about Swat and what happened there right?

Have you seen the recent video statement by Hakimullah Mehsud and Waliur Rehman released recently?

In comments released on a video last month, Hakimullah, 31, said his fighters would halt their attacks and fight India instead if the government "stopped following U.S. orders."

I was a frequent visitor of this forum but after this Fridays tragedy i had to sign up and express my heartfelt condolences to the the families of the victims,as for the those people, who kill children all i can say is that they are deprived of humanity,whether its a result of terrorist activities or collateral damage by military operation, nothing can justify the killings of innocent children. but we must also acknowledge that there were security lapses, they just make these useless security check posts as a formality, concerned authorities must think of measures to improve the security conditions, small steel barriers with two or three men at their sides is definitely not a way to repel such attacks.Anyways its a very poignant moment & i can feel the grief of the affected.
May God grant the departed souls eternal peace and give their families patience to bear this irreparable loss.

useless or not, security checks will still ahve to be done. for technologically backward countries like pak n india, it is easy to filter arms unlike to us or uk. people may laugh that indian navy was unable to stop the muslim terrorists to mumbai, but its so vast (shorelin) and we dont have the tech to back it up and the training is inadequate. even today. that includes the same fro pak as well . the terrorists are 1 step ahead (not because they have technology) because we dont have the tech.
