Bhagavad Gita Must Be Declared National Scripture: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj

Sorry,no need to bring religion into education, period.I don't care whether its gita, purans, upanishads, vedas, granth sahib, quran, mahabharat, bible.
Education is different
I don't think there was a mention to bring it into education, just that it being given a heritage status.

Is it not? When government promotes divine principles as codified by a certain religious faith or pursuits its doctrines specifically, it can be termed as a theocratic one. While not denying that, Gita is perfectly indigenous and inseparable from generalized Indian identity should we not keep it away from governmental affairs if we really want to call ourselves institutionalized secular democracy? Kindly do not assume I am all against it but don't you think it can not be achieved unless a major constitutional change takes place?
The government does not have to promote any religious principles, it is about acknowledging the heritage of this land and Gita is a heritage of this land.

You are mixing the two things, recognition vs promoting.

What does a declaration change?

You are right, it does not! But then if we are a democracy then people have a right to demand recognition of the heritage of this land if they so choose to.

If acknowledging a script as national heritage is the pressing concern, even then it must pass through common national voice. Because the political statements regarding the subject seem to be largely divergent.

Insecure?

I am not religious. However, I see Gita as our heritage, also see Sufi Music as our heritage and the other things which originated in this land.

I only hold connection to this land and not to any religion.

These things are personal,,it should not affect u whether its national heritage or not.
Simple.

As I said before, if people want it then this (secular debate) should be kept out of it and should be seen as the connection it holds to this land which we call India, Bharat and Hindustan.

I do not think so, Gita and the various scriptures did shape to a large extent what we are, if they were personal we would not be what we are. Similarly Sufi Music influenced a lot of people.

waah!
Nike ad and Gita??
Poor Lord Krishna must be getting a lil uncomfortable in "swarg".

My fav lines from gita 're "ends justify the means".
Though I dont know its sanskrit. @Indrani could you help me here:ashamed:
I don't know its correct Sanskritam
In Sanskrit Malayalam its ''Lakshyam Margathe Saadookarikunnu'' or ''Margamalla lakshyamaanu pradaanam''...

Vedas are older than Gita.. why not them.

Point is its still a religious text no matter whats inside it.Other religions will demand a similar status for their own texts like sikhs(granth sahib),jains, buddhists(no idea if they have something or not).

In short----stay away.

I agree and if those demand come from the people, it should be seriously considered cause those also originated here.

Acknowledging things which originated in India irrespective of the religion is a good idea according to me.
