That's one possibility. When the missile goes active on its own seeker it may not be able to pick up the stealth aircraft at first like you said, but once it gets close enough (Detection threshold) it will be able to pick it up and do its terminal homing.Does it track the stealth enemy aircraft via datalinking with the IRST?
The radar on-board the firing aircraft could also provide the datalink information to the missile, assuming it has a solid track on the opposing plane.
