‘Jamaat activists’ on Friday vandalised the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar, set fire to the local outlet of the army-owned Trust Bank, leaving at least 30 injured in clashes, police said. The militants, under the banner of the 12 Islamist parties, were actually Jamaat- e-Islami activists, senior police officials said. The Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, Ejaz Ahmed, told bdnews24.com, a group of “religious hardliners” entered the Shaheed Minar with a procession at around 2:45pm and set on fire the flowers offered there on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day on Thursday. They also smashed the Shaheed Minar boundary wall, Mujib-Jahan Blood Bank and the BMA building, the police said. The area between Zindabazaar and Chouhatta turned into a virtual battle ground as the militants fought pitched battles hurling brickbats at the law enforcers. At least 10 persons, including several journalists, sustained bullet injuries, the police said. Police reportedly fired several rounds of teargas shells, sound grenades and shotgun bullets to gain control of the situation. Deputy Commissioner Ahmed said the law enforcers have been put on alert after the incident.

:what: militants??

Being atheist is ok as long as you keep it to your private group but once you start attacking the faith of a billion people by abusing your freedom of speech then one is pretty stupid if he thinks, he can escape the wrath of people. Along with the breach police has been doing by attacking people who were going to Mosque, peacefully, i would not mind a few of them bleeding in hospital.

i agree , now tell me protest against who ? the protest against who already died and is the destructive protest good ?

The man who insulted my prophet was Declared shahid and a hero by your Shahbag.......

just read my post #154

Protest against bloggers, and Shahbag party who were doing all sorts of stupidity against Islam in an Islamic country. When you cross the limit, there are some destructive protests which inflow greater good. Would you want a overly fascist Police force along with biased political party? no, i wouldn't either. Welcome to democracy.

Then some more will be bashed by majority. When in Rome, do what the Romans do. Stay in your limit and follow minimum society etiquette in public. As long as everyone follows that, there will be stability.

The protest is a caution to all those.

Because now all these anti Islamic stuffs are coming up. When kids go out of hand, they should be slapped back to civility. But ye similar question, where was shahbag all these years?

i do not agree , in such kind of issue , the protest must take place in very early, not when kids go out of hand.

‘Jamaat activists’ go berserk in capital . bdnews24.com Team Published: 2013-02-22 08:30:33.0 Updated: 2013-02-22 12:00:10.0

“Jamaat-e-Islami activists” used the protest call given by the 12 “Islamist” and likeminded parties after Friday prayers to “fight back” as they went berserk in different parts of the country including the capital Dhaka, police say. Reports of clashes also came in from Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and other areas, and journalists were injured after the “Islamists” held protest rallies to “punish anti-religious bloggres” and against a call by the Shahbagh demonstrators demanding a ban on Jamaat and capital punishment for convicted war criminals. A police official in Dhaka said they think the “Islamist” protesters are actually “Jamaat activists” and they “will look into it”. The ‘Islamists’ clashed with police, hurled bombs and pelted stones in and around the Paltan of Dhaka soon after Friday afternoon prayers, prompting the law enforcers to respond with teargas shells and rubber bullets. The ‘Islamists’ gathered at the Baitul Mukarram premises and started throwing stones at police at around 12:45pm, said a bdnews24.com correspondent. img A senior reporter of Maasranga Television and an ATN Bangla cameraman covering the incident were attacked, he added. The ‘Islamist’ activists took out a procession and vandalised a structure which had demands of justice for war criminals of 1971 written on it. At one point they pounced on the police and some explosions followed. Police fired shotgun rounds to bring the situation under control. At least seven people, including two journalists and two policemen were injured, eyewitnesses said. Five, including the injured journalists, were taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Private-run Gazi TV reported Masudur Rahman, 25, sustained bullet injuries in Paltan. Bengali-language daily Dainik Sangbad reporter Saif Bablu, 28, was injured at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram when a brick hurled by the protesters hit him and Dainik Janakantha photojournalist Sheikh Mamun Rashid received bullet injuries. Independent TV cameraman Nurul Islam, 35, also suffered bullet wounds in front of the National Press Club. Wari police Constable Abdul Jalil, 40, has also been admitted at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as he was injured in bricks hurled by protesters at the Kaptanbazar. Apart from them, at least 20 others, injured in various areas of the capital during the rampage, are being treated there. The condition of one of the injured is serious, bdnews24.com’s medical correspondent said from the hospital. img The ‘Islamists’ also clashed with the law enforcers in Kataban adjacent to Shahbagh. Police retaliated by lobbing tear gas shells after the mob pelted stones at the law enforcers, injuring the Assistant Commissioner (Patrol) of Lalbagh Police Rezaul Karim. At least four people were detained from the area. Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Motijheel Circle) Sheikh Nazmul Alam told reporters, “Leaders of the Islami Andolan and 12 like-minded Islamist parties contacted us assuring that they would hold a peaceful demonstration in front of the mosque in protest against the ‘anti-Islamic’ campaign by some Shahbagh bloggers. They were given permission to hold the programme following such an assurance.” “But they resorted to vandalism after their procession headed towards the Press Club, prompting police to fire teargas shells and rubber bullets,” he said. He was asked whether the Jamaat activists who have been running riot across the country for the last three months were involved in the clashes riding on the programmes of other Islamist organisations. The official answered, “I see something like that. We’ll look into the issue.”

Can you elaborate what are the things these non believers attacked and how much damage they caused to see this kind of uproar and problems to public lives??

Hardly anyone knew about these bloggers but the sudden anti Islamic gundami gave rise to Islamic protesters. Nothing surprising.

bro if you think logically , if such things any person does, it comes into public quickly.
My point is some people use religion to fullfill their object, it is not new , it is happening all over the world. watch out of those stuff.
