Bangladesh mulls importing train coaches from ICF

No offense but Indians who haven't traveled on Chinese or even Indonesian coaches have no business bad mouthing them.

Indians judge everything outside India as the same IN INDIA.

Kind of hilarious.

Here is an Indonesian Coach in use in Bangladesh. They have personal cabins and also Chair-cars in use (aircraft type seating).


Please don't even start comparing Chinese coaches with Indian ones.

Just don't. Apni auqaat pe raho....

They are making Bullet trains that can go 500 KMPH.

i have extensively traveled in both Chinese hsr (copied from germans and Japanese) and Indonesian coaches in bd.
I give kudos to the Japanese and the germans without hesitation. No Chinese brain used.
Indonesian coaches have poorer ride quality than Indian lhb coaches. If you don't want to accept , you will also face judgment for lying.

And China has no operational 500 kmph train.

So what if BD cannot manufacture all the simple mechanical things? Yet, it is already a half trillion dollar GDP and our @UKBengali was forecasting it will soon become a trillion dollar economy.

All other countries develop by investing billions of dollars in manufacturing. It is only BD that has no investments in tech products, yet many of our people think it is a trillion dollar economy.

At least, I am happy that so far those brats have not claimed that America or Japan has appealed BD for big loans.

@Black_cats, an underdeveloped country's GDP grows with the growth of its manufacturing sector because much values are added in the finished and semi-finished mechanical goods.

BD lacks this sector, that is why it imports every tiny thing from abroad.

India has no tech. What tech?

Indian Diesel locos at CLW and DLW were always made from copying fifty year old Alco and (more recent) EMD tech from the US. Once DLW started making diesel electric locos, they were licensed copies of ALCO retired loco designs from US. Copies made under license were not all that good either starting out, since local Indian parts were put in.

Bangladesh is not in the same development stage (zamana) anymore where they have to buy 2nd hand or even new Indian locos - and that too, rejects from IR. Woh din ja chuka hai....

We just bought 40 Broad-gauge GT42 locos from EMD USA direct as class 6600. some already in revenue service, rest being built in the US. We will be buying from USA Progress Rail direct going forward, instead of dealing with Indian loco (or even Indian rolling stock) manufacturers.

Over 100 Meter-Gauge Hyundai-Rotem GT38AC locos from Korea also will be joining the fleet as class 3000, some already have. These Meter Gauge locos are conversion capable to Broad Gauge Trackage.

And are the problems with those supplied by Hyundai Rotem resolved ?

For the American ones 28 crore Taka and 20 years warranty? Hmmm, the WDG class newbuilts were half the price with 35 years warranty. Now that electrification is going on, we will need at best 1000 locomotives out of around 5500.

Hopefully a offer is made.

Not expected from a Korean company, Chinese yes.
The inspection team which collaborated in this fraud was from Singapore , probably ethnic Chinese.
Good for the BDs that they stood their ground.
I have gone for inspection many times including to China and their is immense pressure to complete a project, irrespective of such variances.
Being a government agency i guess the completion pressures are mitigated.

There are two thing to look at here. First a country that start with low base grow to certain extent but if it can’t diversify it falls into a middle income trap. For example we can say South American countries. All has reached around 10000 usd per capita gdp but couldn’t grow further after that.

Being a country of 164 million having a gdp of 480 billion USD or even a trillion USD is not something of a very big deal. Even with a trillion usd economy Bangladesh will have a per capita gdp of around 6000-6500 usd that would still be considered one of the lowest in the world. As of now more than 120 countries have per capita gdp above 6000 usd.

So with present trend Bangladesh will reach that mark without of an issue but biggest challenge will be the next level.

PM Hasina has targeted advanced economy status by 2041 which requires 16000 USD per capita income or around 2.8 trillion USD economy considering 180 million citizen. For that definitely Bangladesh needs diversification and a knowledge based economy.

However am not sure why do you bring example of coaches every time. How many coaches Bangladesh really needs? Does it make business sense to build an industry with government fund just to cater that needs when government has many other priorities? I would be happy if Bangladesh build more automobile industry which has more higher demands and reduce reliance on foreign import.

Good post but BD should NOT build an automobile industry as it does not want to encourage mass car ownership.

The country is just far too densely populated to be able to have every adult owning a car.

BD should be fine with building up Pharma, IT, electronics and shipbulding industries as it is doing now to take up the slack within 10-15 years as garments start becominhg uncompetitive.

An industry that BD should definitely be looking at building up over the next decades is nuclear and BD will soon have its very own nuclear power station in Roopur to add to the research reactor that has been in operation since the 1980s. Another will be built by 2030. Self-sufficiency in nuclear technology will be critical as the world's energy resources become depleted into the future

Other industries such as biotechnology can also be built in BD as more graduates come online from the universities and encouraging ex-patriate experts to come back to BD.

Only industries that government should subsidise with heavy public money without a short to medium term return is defence as that is critical to national security.

Rail operation and maintenance needs to be privatised. The government should only govern the rail sector inclding reviewing and approving design (configuration management), setting timetables and ticket prices, etc.. We have to keep heavily subsidising this sector but at least with privatisation the rail mafia can be buried.

Whether our problems re: price, warranty or minor technical niggles are worked out with the Koreans or Americans (or not) - does not have any relation with the fact that we will NOT be ordering Railway motive power from India going forward. Forty years of "experience" have seen to that....end of story. However rail coaches still may be viable option if cheap.

The fact remains that no amount of bad-mouthing, chest-thumping or fake grandstanding on the part of Indians will equate Chinese rail-technology with that of India.

Indian tech in that sector is at the very least twenty years behind that of the Chinese. People who say otherwise are just reducing their credibility. @Beast your views on this please.

These corrupt people should be lined up and fed cow-Kola. They will get their come-uppance someday but they are still gaddi-nasheen, like the current Rail minister.

For now Indian business in Bangladesh seems well-assured I guess.

Indian don't have any technology or patent in rail technology. They even have problem laying a proper track.

Well Pakistan has had problems with its new DPU30 locomotives from China where chassis cracks were observed. Something which should ideally happen only after like 15 year of rigorous service. They have had problems with Korean 2nd hand locomotives too. Alas we cannot sell our reserves to them.

No one asked the govt to build coach manufacturing factories. Not only this but also the railway operation itself must be sold/ leased to multiple private companies.

When it is done, the stupid GoB does not have to build factories. The new private owners would do it or some other companies would build them.

The factories will provide thousands of jobs. Now, the jobs are going to India, Indonesia, south korea, or America.

Our resident indian nutcase is just unhappy that some BD has said something negative about indian products.

All news in the PDF relates primarily to govt capital expenditure on closed sectors that are not open to private companies.

BD GDP is growing due to private enterprises that is breaking ground everyday on everyday products. We are not at that stage where any private or govt body can start investing in capital intensive products where the in country demand is low and export potential uncertain. It will come but not yet.

They paid peanuts and dont expect ferrari. Those diesel locomotive are the low end product of China which price tag is its only advantage. What problem do Laos has with our HSR?
