What's new

Bangladesh GDP 286 billion USD, Per capita 1,733 USD in 2018.

Why are you comparing Bangladesh with India which has a different economic set up all along than Bangladesh owing to it's vast size? Indian economy is 10 times of Bangladesh and it's consumer base is 8 times bigger. So a lot of technology intensive, heavy industries developed there early. Do you think, this was possible in small Bangladesh? Due to it's massive population size and some other factors like inheritance of British legacy and a compulsion to learn English to do work in a country which is linguistically very diverse, India managed to create a pool of man power skilled in English language second only USA. This factor driven the growth of Call center and IT boom there. Do you think that was possible in a smaller and linguistically homogeneous Bangladesh? So it is laughable to expect same level of knowledge, technology, experience and capital for Bangladesh which is neither as large as India nor have undergone industrialization 100 years ago like Japan.Rather than beating the bush here and there and comparing apple with orange why don't you focus in vital indicators necessary for economic growth so that you may not lost your sight counting the trees in the forest?

1.Agricultural growth
2.Industrial growth including manufacturing growth
3.Service sector growth
4.Literacy rate including mean years of schooling
5.Female labor participation
6.Reduced TFR and demographic dividend
7.Public health profile including life expectancy
8.Electrification growth rate
8.Gross capita formation as (%) of GDP
9.Inflation rate and macro-economic stability
10.Foreign debt to GDP ratio
11.Growth in technical and vocational education
12.Growth in infrastructure developmental spending

in some of these indicators we have done already good job and in some others, rapidly narrowing the gap with similar fast growing developing countries. Now tell me, in which of these indicators Bangladesh is doing worse than it's peer countries and about to fail big time?
As a normal Bangladeshi, you have so many excuses for not developing technology, knowledge and experience in BD. How about England? How about Holland and many other nations with tiny population? How about Japan which has only 126 million population, but, yet reached the top level. How about South Korea with a much smaller population than even Japan.

Thing is, BD people learn superstitions from their early childhood. They do not learn anything good on which the country can propel forward with. They believe in the Sky power to solve all their problems. Finally, they end up in the deserts of SA watering the debt trees, and thousands of literate Indians, SriLankans and Nepalese get managerial jobs in BD.

The govt is callous, It has completely failed to establish any good modern administrative institutions that function well. Unless the govt can motivate people towards modernization, there is no way BD will progress any further. Its LDC tag will be removed, but its developing status may continue for many more Centuries. How the PDF people expect a country to develop with the input of Chinese or Japanese money and technology in a few projects when a modern nation has to build thousands of such projects?

Again you are comparing this poor Bangladesh with bunch of developed countries who have history of hundreds of years of accumulated growth and development.

The problem with you is that, you have very narrow vision when it comes to Bangladesh. Your mind is frozen on past and present Bangladesh. You are unable to see anymore development and progress of BD.I am sure, if you were writing these stuff in 1970s, then you would have vigorously defended Henry Kissinger with his statement that Bangladesh will remain a perpetual basket case. In 1980s, you would have put forward a hundred excuse on why this country can never become any significant player in apparel export let alone the 2nd largest exporter.Bangladesh has many problems for sure and has a lot of inefficiency now, but this country is marching forward by blackening the faces of many prophet of doom and gloom. Many such prophets predicted that, By mid 1980s, there will be a big 'die off' in Bangladesh due to famine, millions will perish. But we know now that they were not correct.

In my previous post I have given a large number of factors on why we can count on continued progress of Bangladesh for at least in foreseeable future.Although I believe that, South Asian countries will not get to the level of Western level of prosperity anytime soon. But this is not due to any inherent lack of capability, but because the huge population pressure and very low per capita resources. Some countries developed despite lack of resources for sure like Japan or South Korea, but they are small countries without big footprint on world resources. South Asia with more than 2 billion future estimated population can not replicate that. World is gasping for providing 1.2 billion western consumers, it has no way can provide similarly 2 billion south Asian and 1.4 billion Chinese. So stall in the mid way of western level prosperity is probably inevitable. I think, these overpopulated Asian countries will stall after achieving around 40-50 percent per capita income of American and western European level. But even that would be a vast improvement from the current level. Here people may not have 2-3 car in a family but will be content with just 1 car.Average person here may not be able to make a holiday trip in Italy or France, but they will be able to go to Thailand or Malaysia. And everyone will have enough food, clothing, free treatment, education, decent housing etc.So we may not live a western 'excess' lives, but a decently prosperous life is within the horizon.

When did I say all the countries developed in one day? I said, BD lacks all the ingredients necessary for the future development. All the today's developed countries built up their capacity by gradually developing their respective manpower, technology and experience in the past for a few Centuries.

But, this is what is not happening in BD, although it is happening in India. BD cannot manufacture a machine, but India can. BD cannot build its own projects, India can. Think of India's Farakka Barrage and BD's Paira port. When the Indian companies build its own power stations, BD cannot because private companies are not to be nurtured. Think of a Derick crane in a port. Can BD build it? No, because private companies are not nurtured here. India nurtures its companies. So, they certainly can. This is why I say BD lacks all the ingredients to become even a developing country, whatever status may the UN awards it.

For a deeper understanding of national development process, you have to learn it from some other genuine sources.

good, but my only dream is to get Bangladesh nuclear

Why do you dream of something that BD does not need?

However, you can only imagine (funny though) of an association like 'SAARC-minus-India' where each country will possess NUKE like Turkey does under some protection treaty with NATO.

BD needs nukes for deterrence against India and Myanmar. We don't need too many but we do need sufficient number to wipe both of them off the map if BD's existence is in danger. If we go down, we take them with us.

We don't currently have any problem of course but the only country I see ever even coming close to reasonably enough threat for BD is Our neighbours.

.
I can summarise it to one word.

Garbage.

Nah thats what is between your ears.....either that or a vacuum.....maybe depends on which part of the Brit Bong Ghetto you are in....the one you are so proud of you can't even use a BD flag for your origin.

So, you are asking for the “Samson option”?

Let's not get too crazy here. Sure BD needs defence against both, but nukes? Come on now. The last thing the world needs is another nuclear power. Besides, India and Pakistan will likely nuke each other first before we even have to nuke anyone else.

Key word being deterrence. It deters other countries from even engaging in any more than a skirmish exchange in border or something. We need nukes for deterrence against Myanmar and specially India since they already posses nukes. I am not asking for war, I want BD to have nukes to make India think hard before even considers to fight BD.

Also the fact that we are 160M+ country and 8th most populous. We shouldn't leave this many people defenceless against countries that posses nukes where the fight would totally be one sided since for the attacking country, at worst only BD's 165 M will get obliterated while they live to see another day. BD already have incentive not to fight but with nukes, it will give incentives for India not to engage with BD too.

So, you are asking for the “Samson option”?
Yes. Exactly. I want BD to absolutely stay away from any war but if any country considers fight with BD, BD should have the ability to wipe them off, if it's existence is in danger. It's deterrence to keep other countries to follow what BD follows, which is BD has no interest in fighting and so shouldn't you. As I said before, 160+ million people shouldn't be defenceless against nuke possessing countries.

How about, chemical and biological mass destruction weapons? Nukes are too much expensive...
