Bangladesh’s New Military Deal With China

Bangladesh’s purchase of K-8W aircraft has sparked some controversy at home.

A new contract has been signed that will see China deliver 23 units of Hongdu K-8W intermediate training jets to the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF). The deal was sealed on June 20 at the Bangladesh Air Force Headquarters in Dhaka. Bangladesh’s newly appointed Air Force chief was present at the signing ceremony along with China’s ambassador in Bangladesh. BAF did not disclose the total amount of the deal, but a source told The Diplomat that it’s more than $200 million.

The light attack-cum-jet trainer is now being used by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (as its domestic variant, the JL-8), Pakistan Air Force, Egyptian Air Force, Myanmar Air Force, and Bangladesh Air Force, among others.

This deal marks the second phase of Bangladesh’s K-8W fleet. Bangladesh has been using this aircraft since September 2014, when the first batch of four units of K-8Ws was inducted into the service. BAF sources say that the K-8Ws will be replacing the aged Cessna T-37s fleet. There are also plans to buy 16 units of the Russian Yak-130 to replace the T-37.

Why the K-8W? In 2010, Myanmar purchased 50 units of the K-8W, which put the BAF under pressure to also buy more training jets to advance its capability and quantity. The K-8W will prepare pilots to operate the service frontline fleet of China-made Chengdu and Mig-29 fighters.

In addition, the K-8W and another training aircraft of the BAF, the Aero L39 Albatros developed by the former Czechoslovakia, use the same engine. The Ivchenko Al-25 is a widely used twin-shaft medium bypass turbofan engine developed by the former Soviet Union. The BAF will be seriously considering maintainability and spare part issues based on its budget.

Meanwhile, there is some side talk in different defense blog sites that the BAF may be making a mistake by buying more training aircraft instead of developing a good fighter inventory. A source in the BAF, when asked about that argument, said that the K-8W deal was part of the country’s Forces Goal 2030 – even if the details pertaining to that part of the plan haven’t been publicized. At the moment BAF needs to build a decent number of jet trainers, he argued, and more attack fighters are coming soon. He also mentioned that a squadron of multirole jet fighters will be visible shortly, but the model and country of origin is still classified.

The criticism started as Bangladesh currently has fewer than 45 fighter jets but has 51 jet training aircraft. The new fleet of K-8Ws will increase the number of trainers. However, the BAF source said that a large number of old training jets will be retired soon, so this procurement is no “fun” but a very “timely need.”

According to the publicly available data of Forces Goal 2030, the BAF will set up an advance fighter pilot training unit named “105 Advance Jet Training Unit.” The unit will consist of three training squadrons, which will provide advanced training to the pilots selected for operating fighter jets.

Overall, Forces Goal 2030 plans to make the Bangladesh Air Force a technologically advanced, well-trained, and well-equipped force that can deter any threat to Bangladeshi airspace. These plans emphasize strengthening both air power and air defense capabilities. To efficiently perform the increasing duties and responsibilities, the air force is being divided into two separate commands, “Southern Air Command” and “Northern Air Command.” Two new airbases have been already set up — one at Cox’s Bazar and Bangabandhu airbase at Dhaka, with plans to modernize and expand the Cox’s Bazar air base. A new air base and a maritime air support operation center (MASOC) are being set up under Southern Air Command at Barisal to ensure maritime security. Another air base is under construction at Sylhet.

First of all I heard they taste awful....and second of all my contention is that the vast majority of "a/c acquisition CONFIRMED!!!!" topics in BD forum that attracted 1000 of pages of discussion (down the drain now) were not about trainer aircraft lol. @Imran Khan @Marine Rouge

I mean what are trainer aircraft going to do except buzz around and sound annoying when a neighbour country is shoving into you a million or so people (that you protest aren't yours) in a few short weeks?

The reality is Bangladesh has a multitude of problems. Getting military equipment isn't a solution for those.

However, the original thread was regarding acquistion of military equipment.

Well BD posters should commensurately structure their discussion priorities then.

Potential to potentially potentially acquire one squadron of potential this and that attracts magnitudes more heavy serious discussion than things like economic and social development (which if any ppl participate are just patting on the back about BBS claims and same old groupthink, instead of actual analysis of truth and solutions).

So your own members are responsible in the end for the atmosphere that has been cultivated here over time.

@TopCat, please give your opinion about this purchase, the future induction plan of fighter jets as well as your opinion about the fatty BAF Chief. I am personally very optimistic about the future of BAF. The present report also says about the jet induction.

The induction of training planes is a precursor of the induction of real fighter jets. I just hope, it is Su-30SME and/or J-10 planes. People here talk about Rafael and other planes. But, BAF has not so far bought any planes from a European source. It has always been Russia and China. I believe, the new induction also will not deviate from this line.

I think the training goes CJ-6 to K-8W to Yak-130 to operational conversion in the Mig-29 or J-7 squadrons.

I guess the next step would be to get some more Yak-130 and the new type whatever that may be.

Well it baffled me, countries like South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand doesnt have much jet trainer squadrons compared to their actual number of frontline fighter. On other hand Bd got more trainer/light attack jet compared to their actual frontline fighter.

Usually, if any Air Forces want to seriously increasing the number of fighter pilots and increasing their rates of training flight hours, they dont usually put them on LIFT conversion trainer squadrons for long time and hours. Instead they will increasing the number of basic trainer squadrons (in Indonesia case using Grob pt series) , then forward potential pilots trainee toward advance training course (using KT 1 wong bee) and after that they will be sent toward their respective fighter squadrons after passing some conversion jet training using LIFT (T/50) aircraft this phase is not long actually, as they will be trained using double seater version fighter at their respective squadrons of frontline fighter like F16 or Flanker. Thus i conclude, Bangladesh is increasing their fighter squadrons by purchase of this light attack/trainer jet aircraft to patrol their sky, Indonesia and Malaysia doing that too in the past by purchase of hawk 100/200 series.

So your saying BAF is buying these K-8 in a combat role rather than as trainers?

What is your idea, do the fighters come first or the trainers? It is certainly the trainers. All the airforces have so many trainers in their stock. No one with a sane mind will ever think of using the trainers like K-8s in the actual combat. At least give our BAF the benefit of doubt that the officers there are not insane. Do you really think BAF will use the trainers to bomb or fight the enemy planes? Read about how low performer can be a trainer.

"The K-8 can climb at a rate of 30m/s. The maximum speed is 800km/h. The range and service ceiling of the aircraft are 2,140km and 13,600m respectively. The maximum endurance is four hours 25 minutes".

BAF is not alone, many countries have so many trainers including K-8. Even a small MAF has 62 units of K-8 planes. Only when BAF inducts trainers in adequate numbers you guys start badmouthing it. Read below:

"Egypt (118), Ghana (four), Myanmar (62), Namibia (12), Pakistan (55), China (200), Sri Lanka (six), Sudan (12), Tanzania (six), Zambia (eight) and Zimbabwe (11)".
