What's new

AVIC Presents FC-31 Stealth Fighter model to Pakistan Air Force Chief.

From a different perspective looking at the bigger picture, no country buys weapons just for the love of them, the primary and main reason is to deter the enemy from aggression, and that my friend Pakistan has achieved quite successfully. We can spend more on defence but at the cost of social uplift. If less spend on weapons can prevent war, then the balance should be spent on the people, that is why despite being a much smaller economy compared with India, our standard of living is much higher than that, our poor are better than their lower mid class, our lower class better than their mid class and so on

Budget is never unlimited but scarcity of money is usually managed by good planning, something that simply does not exist in PAF's dictionary. In Musharraf's time, there was money, and option too to buy Blk-52; what we did? Instead of 36, we bought only 18. Nation was fooled that money spent on Azad Kashmir Earth quake and PAF made great sacrifice; what a baloney, same reason was given for cancellation of other acquisitions. No, it does not work like this. Funds allocated to certain departments are not used up like this and I know it for my father served as a top bureaucrat with GoP. The fact is, other than handful of F-16s, we have nothing but practice drones for our enemy, no matter how PAF spins it. We have to induct at-least one squadron strength of Blk-52 or go for J-11 for these fighter are needed to maintain reasonable air-superiority, which will allow 2nd tier jets to fly and conduct missions. JF-17 even in its blk-III configuration is not going to be a game changer. With same old engine, only so much could be done to a fighter no matter you take the blk number to XX.

That is a good development. I do not see J-31 in PAF colors before 2020 - 2022. However what this official recognitions and declaration of interest, we will incorporate some of the goodies, both from J-31 and J-20 in future JF-17 block. Remember that PAF will not induct these fifth generation planes in huge numbers so whatever latest technology we can get in JF-17 will be of very high value and importance.

Also as far as i have been following, PAF seem to be moving towards a highly network centric force in future and we will see the mix of Hi-Lo planes fighting as a single unit backed by ground radars and AESA. This is the future and we will start seeing things starting around 2018.

1) No, J-31 is for customers exports especially Pakistan
2) Yes, same RD-93/33 as our JF-17

:(

Pakistan should purchase F35 more capables until J-31 must complete all the process.

Why not directly go for F-22??
I heard it is wayyyyy better

Few things here....

* the air chief asked for advanced sensor fusion + avionics aesa and weapons for jft. The j-31 offer came from avic head and at very friendly terms, yeah we know this part ;)

* actually the PLAN has shown interest n j-31 even before us, more so because they love Shenyang aircrafts and already operating plethora of J-11, 15, 16 etc.

* likely timeline of delivery should be 2022-24 in the Ernest.
Will J-31 close to F-35 ? I mean in performance and capabilities ?

. .
Will there be MOU and TOT for J-31.
Is there any chance of getting j-16 or j-11D

MOU may be TOT is difficult no chance of J-16 if budget increases than may be J-11D in future for Navy

Why so people are so angry at PAF about its acquisitions? The way I see it, they have been the best performing arm of defense forces in any conflict. Performance of army and navy comes no where close to what PAF achieved in wars.

If you look at present, they have been successful in inducting JF-17 faster than Teja in IAF. They have been providing outstanding support to ZeA. And what is this obsession with J-10, J-11 or J-16? How many of us are test pilots? Has anyone among us flown these aircraft? What if there is something PAF can see and we can't? Do we claim to be experts on advance fighter jets by browsing on internet? Seriously? Given the way PAF has done through out, I tend to believe them.

We shall never go for such an expensive lemon stringed with so many conditions ....Chinese are cool with us ...politically ....!

excellent post and thats what im thinking abt PAF.

@Windjammer why dont PAF lead the way like IDAF?

Apart from obvious budget constraints, you will find that where ever possible PAF policy is to be as self sufficient or at least have interests in the weapon system it acquires. The JF-17 ideally serves PAF's operational requirements. This aircraft will alone replace and take over the roles of five assorted types of Mirage and F-7s currently serving in PAF inventory.

Up until mid 80s, PAF had no policy whatsoever let alone on self-sufficiency. PAF woke up one day when our Ambassador (Mr. Karamat ullah Ghouri) in Beijing was told about no more free military hardware for Pakistan.

Our Air Chief's have also been presented with J-10 model but no acquisitions were ever made. Lets not blow this formal gesture out of proportion for our Air Force has a history to disappointing this nation when it comes to make proactive decisions. I will be highly surprised to see J-31 in PAF colors.

I certainly do concur with your sentiments. Not with the current engines especially.
The thing needs more baking. No knee jerk reactions please.

Indeed as a former foreign minister once said, these sanctions and embargoes have been a blessing in disguise for else we may still have been relying on Korean era weaponry.
