What fairy tales? There was one report about this which has any credibility. It mentions that he got separated from his main force by riding hard, and there were only 18 of them when they reached the outskirts of Lakhnauti. They then mingled with the crowds, pretending to be up-country horse traders, who travellled armed in those days, as almost all traders did, till they reached the gates of the palace. There they attacked the unwary guards, killing them and storming into the palace. There were no other soldiers on duty, the emperor was sitting down at lunch, when this rude interruption occurred. In that noisy confusion and terror, the emperor was hurried out of the back entrance, onto the river jetty and left by boat, still unaware of what had really happened. Soon Khilji's other troops arrived, and the Turks had a real grip on the situation.
