Yes I do know, if Xiang Yu had won or if Qin Shi Huangdi's successor had survived Zhao Gao, then China would be a different country today. But that isn't why I picked Liu Bang as my nicknamed. Liu Bang is the ultimate underdog. Not necessary the brightest nor the strongest but he ultimately win everything at the end. Liu Bang did back stabbed people so what (he isn't rare in that history in that regard). Xiang Yu burried 200,000 surrender troops alive and still consider as a tragic hero. Meh, I like Liu Bang. Confucianism is almost a non religion in my eye. Which I really like as a secular and an atheist. This is why China sometimes don't have non sense debates or controversy like people accusing Obama as a muslims or war on Christmas. There are real shit to be worry about and not backward debate on whether condom work in prevention of HIV, or female priesthood, or whatever.

Because Confucianism is not monopolized morality, any chinese citizens could stray from it or modified it as they see fit without having to think they are sin or bullshit like that.

On the other hand, this articles deals with capitalism, economic growth with Confusions values, yet we had none of that and still not only made it, but we are still leading the world.

Very true. But I think, the point here is what work for the USA is different than what work for Asia. India and China don't need to go down the same path as the USA. Which is good diversify and learn from each other as a human race.

We were puzzled when seeing how Greek and French public reacted by strikes or even riots when their very own country, their very own elected public servants are trying the saving the whole country from debt crisis. We were equally puzzled to see looting and fully armed police in Katrina devastated New Orleans.

Leong et al (2013) made a great premise in comparing the successes of protestant-majority post-industrialized states with East Asia on the context of the religious or philosophical praxis present , namely the similarities of Protestant Work Ethic with Confucian Work Ethic.

The Protestant Work Ethic (PWE) had significant relationships with affective, continuance and normative organizational commitment, whereas Confucian value dimensions of diligence and harmony were significantly related to job satisfaction and affective / normative commitment, respectively. What's interesting is that Leong et al (2013) utilized dominance analyses and revealed that Confucian harmony was more useful in predicting affective commitment whereas in Protestant Work Ethic -- it was more useful in predicting normative commitment.

Actually, there have been plethora of academic work citing the positive correlation in Protestant Work Ethic and Confucian Work Ethic in regards to professional assessments in context to affective and normative commitment.

Part of their behavior shaped by the injustice of the laws. Part of it is just their own moral decay. Overall, in the usa, there are just so so many factions. And all are lobbyist for their own self interest. There are always racial tension and divide. Let take this head line for example.

You're correct @liubang . There are so many independent variables that have affected the African American population in regards to success, including: a) single parent household , b) poverty, c) social injustices, d) effect of racism on internal development, e) gang culture and gang violence and the effects on personal and professional development.

We cannot ignore these variables in our analyses and thus should be objective about it. If and when the united states removes these variables, there's no reason why African Americans can't achieve , as whole, in comparative levels to say Asian Americans or Caucasian Americans in academic performance levels.

Let me give an explanation of the Japanese point of view in context to your post:

  1. Japanese people tend to accomodate others' opinions rather than speak up for themselves. They attach much importance to harmony. Corporate policies are preaching the the importance of harmony.
  1. Many corporate systems are structured for cooperative employee performance. An employee submits an application for approval, for such things as a new plan, business trip or purchase (called "Ringisho") to the chief who passes it along to a higher level where it is again passed up the chain of command. If the application is approved, it is sent to accounting section, and then to purchasing section where the order is placed. In this way, responsibility is shared by many people. This system seems very inefficient, however, once the decision is made, the subject is performed in whole organization scale as a company mission.
  1. Japanese manufacturers cut their production costs by using sub-contractor grouping system. In the 1880s, Japanese automobile manufacturers reduced their costs by adopting a procurement method called "Kanban Hoshiki (Price and delivery control system by grouping sub-contractors)" and swept over the U.S. market. In 1990s, the U.S. automobile manufacturers developed the Information Technology to fight back. This is an example of the differences of attitudes between Japan and the United States that Japanese people attach importance to forming a group while Westerners attach importance to a technology (science).
  1. Companies also form nationwide group. This is called "Goso Sendan Houshiki (Armed Convoy System). The flagship is the Japanese Government. Companies are transport ships and ministries are the warships to protect and support the transport ships which carry the economy. Private companies are therefore highly regulated by the government.
    For example, recently the mayor of Osaka prefecture required the federal government's support to reduce the landing fee at Osaka International Airport which is under non-government management.
  1. In feudal times, a lord who owned his castle governed his territory by his own law, with warriors working under him. Members of the general public was at the lowest status. This concept still underlies current Japanese society. A company is the castle, administrative employees are the warriors and clerks are the general public. Employees have strong feelings that they are owned by their company and should to pledge their loyalty to the company. Changing jobs is regarded as disloyalty and is a disadvantage for the next employment opportunity. As more importance is attached to a group than to an individual, a company has more financial confidence than an individual. There are many cases of companies or organizations accepting business accounts only for companies. The U.S. domain name, com. is available for both companies and individuals, but the Japanese domain name, .co.jp is available for companies only.
  1. Lifetime employment:
    The Japanese employment system has traditionally been operated as lifetime employment. Changing jobs is regarded as a lack of allegiance to the company and is dis-advantageously evaluated by next employer.
  1. In most Japanese companies, white-collar executives account for a higher percentage than executives come from technical field comparing with Western companies. Most of the member of Japanese national assembly are graduates of law schools.
  1. In Japanese organizations, as in homes, hosts invite their guests to take superior seats. It is supposed that this custom has been passed down from feudal times.
  1. Within Japanese organizations, when speaking of other employees, the person's name is said without an honorific title even for high ranking employees. This comes from a strong group consciousness that every employee of a company belongs to the company and is a part of the company, and people are categorized as insiders or outsiders.
Very interesting results ! Most of the productive nations in Europe are those with a strong Protestant Work Ethic:

The United States, also, which is predominantly Protestant Christian, also has a very strong Protestant Work Ethic. In fact the 19th century American Entrepreneurial Barons of the Industrial Revolution were all Protestants who proudly cited their Protestant Work Ethic in their success:

Its definitely going to be an interesting century , if not growing unstable, in regards to global health. There are pockets of instability in the globe that the West (traditionally have taken the mantle of being the "guardians" of world order) have proven unable to control or keep at peace. When i say the 'West', I'm referring to the United States, France, UK, Germany and other key and active members of NATO (as not all NATO member states are active at all, many are insignificant).

Now, let me identify these pockets of instability:
a) The Middle East (Syria , Iraq, GCC)
b) North Africa (Libya, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia)
c) Subsaharan Africa (Nigeria, Congo, Kenya, Benin, Djibouti, Sudan
d) Latin America (Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, Panama, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico)
e) Europe (The Ukraine, the ethnic / religious tensions in Europe cannot be ignored)
f) South and Southeast Asia

It is clear that the West-led security apparatus is not able to counter effectively these threats, either they are unable to or are unwilling to expend the resources that continues to mount our global community. This is where I see the role of East Asia coming to play. The Giants of East Asia (China and Japan) have been largely vested in development of Asia-Pacific , this can be seen in our two nations' massive economies (China = $10.5 Trillion GDP, Japan = $5 Trillion GDP).

China and Japan have been active in Africa and beyond in terms of investment and developmental initiatives, and our foreign policies , clearly and visibly, have been affixed on a peaceful vantage point. To a flaw. Our multi-billion dollar initiatives in Africa, the Middle East and beyond have been limited to official development assistance aid, grants, but have been lacking in security apparatus. The multi billion dollar initiatives by both Japan and China in North Africa and the Middle East have been incinerated due to the civil war and terrorism-based infighting there.

In trying to focus on being 'benign' and 'peaceful oriented' both Japan and China have not , historically, aspired for a military based foreign policy or a linked security apparatus with our multifactorial investments abroad. See how that helped us ! It is apparent, my friend, that Japan and China MUST take up an active policy in securing our interests abroad. It is necessary given the size of our individual nations' economy, which if combined is as large as the entire European Union.

So what must we do? What must be done? Active participation and deployment of the People's Liberation Army, Navy and Air Force in order to secure China's interests in Africa, the Middle East, South America, Europe. Japan, too, must deploy the Japanese Self Defense Forces to secure Japanese trade missions abroad, investments, as well as work with the Chinese to guarantee the Freedom of Navigation in the Straits of Djibouti as well as in the Persian Gulf. We cannot rely simply on NATO or the Americans. And that is clear. We must discern on our future, our shared and mutual interests , and together must work to stabilize our Asia-Pacific, and Beyond. We are living in the cusp of an interesting paradigm shift in regards to international power and order. :)

I recommend you read a work by Okabe Tatsumi titled "Nitchu kankei no kako to shorai (The Past and Future of Sino-Japanese Relations)"

Nitchu kankei stresses the mutual influence and interrelationships that characterize Sino-Japanese relations. Peace and friendship are advanced as natural and appropriate goals for both powers to be achieved through mutual understanding. Okabe presses for a problem-solving approach toSino-Japanese relations. “Can we really say that ‘China is bad’ or ‘Japan is bad’? China has its point of view and Japan has Japan’s.” From this starting point, the work discusses previous failings of Sino-Japanese relations, outlines potential pitfalls, and imagines a better future. It exemplifies how positive imaginative projects conducive to a breakthrough in China-Japan relations are being presented in Japanese academic and popular writing.

The orientation of the majority of Japanese academics in the humanities and social sciences, and of presses that publish a range of relevant titles like Iwanami and Akashi Shoten, is positive about the future of China-Japan relations. What is particularly striking is that the hopeful vision presented in Nitchu kankei is shared by popular works in all of the major paperback non-fiction series. The majority clearly anticipate closer relations between Japan and China and see this as serving Japanese as well as Chinese interests.

@TaiShang bro, i know you're an academic scholar, have you read Okabe's works before? He's one of my favorites in regards to Sino-Japanese Analysis. In fact some of his earlier works inspired me in conducting some of my own independent research on the cross-straits relations (China-Japan, not China-Taiwan, lol).
