Tiankun, Asia's largest dredger, is expected to begin its first sea trial on Friday, a signal of China's improving capability in island building, Chinese experts said on Thursday.

The trial, which will take place in waters near Qidong, East China's Jiangsu Province, will test Tiankun's power system and make sure it functions in all circumstances, said Wei Yaxin, an employee of the Tianjin Dredging Company, which designed the dredger.

If the trial goes well, Tiankun will enter service at the end of August, said Wang Jian, deputy chief engineer of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), the parent company of Tianjin Dredging Company.

Once in use, "Tiankun will speed up the pace of China's island building," Wang said.

Tiankunis China's first domestically designed and manufactured dredger. Its construction began in December 2015 in Jiangsu Province to meet China's economic and national defense needs, according to a statement sent to the Global Times by the CCCC.

China used to buy costly dredgers assembled or designed overseas.

"Compared with imported dredgers, Tiankunhas helped us save at least one third of the costs," Wang said.

The dredger cannot be exported or sold to foreign countries as the Ministry of Commercelimited exports of large engineering ships in May 2017.

Tiankunis able to blast through seabed rock and sucks up sand, using a 6,600-kilowatt cutting tool, Wang said.

It can dredge in ports, coastal waters or deep sea, CCCC said on its website.

Tiankuncan excavate 6,000 cubic meters of silt per hour and reach a maximum depth of 35 meters below the sea level.

Tiankunhas larger steel poles and is therefore more stable than the company's previous dredger Tianjing. Other advanced features included an all-electric vessel design equipped with dual positioning system and unlimited global navigation; oil changes dependent on local conditions; and minimized impact on the marine environment through better means of breaking rocks before excavation.

To support the Belt and Roadinitiative, Tianjing since December has dredged channels and helped build ports in Ghana, said Wei. Tianjing will remain there for another four years, he said. "Only countries who share a good diplomatic relationship with China are likely to borrow such dredgers."

Good, keep building there and make JP-US more worry and support VN more, bro

pls note that our oil shipping line from Middle east to VN dont pass SCS(east VN sea) like JP-Guam

China's deep-sea exploration equipment is expected to systematically explore the South China Sea in 2020, a scientist said on Thursday.

The one year global expedition of Jiaolong is scheduled to begin in June 2020 and includes more than 10 countries, mostly along the route of the Belt and Road initiative.

With its advantages in gathering samples in a complicated deep-sea environment, Jiaolong is the perfect underwater vessel to explore the South China Sea, whose deepest region is around 5,000 meters, Ding Zhongjun, deputy chief engineer at the national deep sea center in Qingdao, East China's Shandong Province, told the Global Times on Thursday.

Scientists say Jiaolong is capable of diving in virtually all seas to a depth of less than 7,000 meters.

The Jiaolong's as-yet unnamed mothership will also carry the unmanned deep-sea research submersibles Qianlong and Hailong that can gather higher-quality data in the South China Sea, Ding said.

Drilling facility Shenlong, mining facility Kunlong, information sharing system Yunlong and comprehensive platform Longgong are all also expected to enter operation for joint missions in the South China Sea, Ding said.

When the seven pieces of equipment are put into operation, it would make China a leading player in global deep-sea technology, Ding said.

The expedition will also promote regional exchanges in deep-sea research technologies, Ding said.

The southern South China Sea is rich in resources including natural gas hydrate, an important potential replacement for oil and natural gas.

The South China Sea is of strategic importance for China's deep sea development and its exploration would boost the nation's involvement in global deep-sea governance, he noted.

Seems China peaceful rise is unstoppable. If anything then this: Vietnam can learn from China in creating beautiful islands in nowhere for a peaceful world. Our dredgers are too small too weak. We need bigger variants.

China may have learned from Vietnam (and surpassed it) given that Vietnam is the very first island developer in the SCS.

The vietnamese always think they are smart in kick starting the ball. It only holds the water if your foe is a small fried but sorry. That foe is China. A superpower.

Don’t afford a game you can’t play. The small island Vietnam enlarge ended up with China gaining a few more strategic islands. These just shows how primitive and shallow these Vietnamese thinking. :enjoy:

Like I said before, Don't wake up The Dragon.

When He wake up, He will Revenge for what you did 100x times more.

Indeed. China simply outdoes Vietnam in Island building game.

Lesson 1: Do not start a game that you are sure to lose.

Lesson 2: China will definitely beat you when it comes to stamina, scale and extend. This is sort of Physics 101. Vietnam had an entire millennium to learn it by heart.

Lesson 3: Do not cry foul when you are beaten in a fair game.

China continues to provide regional public goods in the form of inclusive development:

Station broadcasts shipping forecasts to South China Sea

Source:Global Times Published: 2018/6/8

China aired its first English language oceanic forecast in the South China Sea on Friday on Guangzhou Coast Radio Station with a coverage range of 926 kilometers (500 nautical miles).

The development means China is now able to release forecasts for the South China Sea in both Chinese and English, the China News Service reported.

Such a service signifies China's improved capability to implement international conventions, defend China's maritime rights and serve the international public in the sphere including rescue operations in the South China Sea, according to the report.

The broadcast effectively covers the country's Xisha, Zhongsha and Huangyan islands, providing all ships with precise safety information, safeguarding their navigation, life and property, the report added.

"By enhancing the country's public service capability in the South China Sea, China is sending the world a direct message of its firm stance in safeguarding its territorial sovereignty in the South China Sea," Li Kaisheng, a research fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Friday.

China also displays its development of the region in the civilian dimension, Li said, adding that China even facilitates freedom of navigation by providing such a public service.

Starting Friday, the English version of the South China Sea maritime forecast would be broadcast at 9 am-9:10 am and 9 pm-9:10 pm Beijing time through the Navigational Telex (Navtex) or 4029.5 KHz, the report said.

The Navtex is an international automated system for distributing navigational warnings, weather forecasts and rescue notices to ships.

The forecast is generated by the South China Sea Prediction Center before it is forwarded to the Guangzhou Coast Radio Station in South China's Guangdong Province.

As one of the five Navtex radio stations in China, the Guangzhou Coast Radio Station broadcasts maritime safety information to waters including south of the Taiwan Straits and the South China Sea.
