Do you seriously believe China is looking for an equal relationship with its neighboring powers by claiming all of the south China sea, up to the shores of some countries? This had been the core of Chinese geopolitical thought (in a more hubristic form) during the dynasties of yesteryear, and it is still present today.

We defeated Siem, destroyed and killed all its fleet;
We defeated France and captured more than 11 thousand French troops at Dien Bien Phu.
We defeated the U.S. and its allies.

Although there was a long time Vietnam was forced to accept a vassal of China because we had not enough forces to fight the Chinese tactic of "human waves" year after year, but in the end we defeated China not once but many times.
