Army Rejects Gillani Claims - Gillani sacks Defence Secretary

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan's military says the country's army chief has summoned his commanders amid spiking tensions between the armed forces and the civilian government.

Military spokesman Maj. Muhammad Ali Diyal declined to say what the talks Thursday at army headquarters were about.

On Wednesday, the prime minister fired the defense secretary and the powerful military warned of "grievous consequences", widening a destabilizing rift between the country's institutions.

Relations between President Asif Ali Zardari and the generals have never been good, but have soured dramatically in recent months.

Pakistan's army has ruled Pakistan for much of its six-decade existence, and no civilian government has ever completed its term in office.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's military chief met top commanders on Thursday amid a widening rift between the powerful armed forces and the civilian government.

Military spokesman Maj. Muhammad Ali Diyal declined to say what the talks at army headquarters were about, but the meeting is likely to fuel speculation about the army's next move in the country's political and legal crisis.

While most analysts say army chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani has little appetite for a coup, they say the generals may be happy to allow the Supreme Court to dismiss the government by "constitutional means."

On Wednesday, the prime minister fired the defense secretary and the military issued an unusual statement warning of "grievous consequences", as the fallout from a scandal centered on a memo written to Washington asking for its help in reining in the generals widened.

The Supreme Court, seen as hostile to President Asif Ali Zardari and an ally of the army, is investigating that affair and a second one linked to past corruption cases against the president. Both could potentially be used as a pretext to oust the current civilian leadership.

Pakistan's army has ruled the country for much of its six-decade existence, and still sees itself as the rightful custodian of the country's interests. No civilian government has ever completed its term in office.

The Zardari government, which was democratically elected in 2008, is determined to see out its term.

General elections are scheduled for next year, but could well take place sooner.

The government has been widely criticized for ineptness, poor or ineffectual governance, and alleged corruption.

Still, domestic and international proponents of democracy say it should be able to complete its term, and elections should decide the country's next leaders. They note successive military coups in Pakistan are a main cause of the country's current malaise.

One thing I learned from this incident is never to trust media. They just want BREAKING NEWS. Now it is a BREAKING NEWS that Zardari left for Dubai... :disagree:

Its just propaganda news...
-- There is a writ filed in Supreme Court against the possible dismissal of COAS and DG ISI.
-- And today the dismissal of former Secretary Defence has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

what most people need to understand is that while one particular party is ineffectual , does not mean the whole political class is to be branded with the same brush . democracy takes time to mature . you need to give it a chance.

Due to his mental illness and the current pressure he started to act like "King" of "Kingdom" of Pakistan:D

I say let the government work for Pakistan as u$ual with the u$ual hone$ty till they end their term, same goes for the army let them diversify their work away from their original work which they are $uccessful in.

And the common man is kept busy with the triangle of food, cloth and shelter even after 60+ years and is still made to think just inside that triangle.

A country which cannot ensure a few of the least rights of a citizen, what is the use of that country?
