Army Rejects Gillani Claims - Gillani sacks Defence Secretary

Pakistan in turmoil as furious generals hint at coup d'etat - World News - Independent.ie

The dispute between Pakistan's civilian administration and the military has erupted again after the army warned of "grievous consequences" for the country, and the prime minister sacked the defence secretary.

In the latest twist in a dispute that has simmered for months, the army yesterday issued a statement that said recent comments made by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had "very serious ramifications with potentially grievous consequences for the country".

The army's stern warning came after an increasingly bold Mr Gilani gave an interview to a Chinese newspaper in which he said the army chief, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, and the head of military intelligence, Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha, had acted unconstitutionally by giving evidence to a supreme court investigation. He claimed that they should have first sought the government's approval.

The dispute between the army and the government swirls around the ramifications of a memo sent last spring to the US military, allegedly at the behest of President Asif Ali Zardari.

According to a US-Pakistani businessman who said he was asked to act as an intermediary, the note asked for assistance in reining in Pakistan's generals and preventing them from launching a coup in the wake of the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

Pakistan's supreme court has set up an investigatory panel to establish whether the note was sanctioned by Mr Zardari, something that could lead to his possible impeachment.

As part of the inquiry, Mr Kayani and Mr Pasha, along with many others, submitted statements to the court.

As the army issued its statement denouncing Mr Gilani, he announced he was firing the country's Defence Secretary Naeem Khalid Lodhi, a retired general who acted as a bridge between the military and the civilian government.

Lt-Gen Lodhi was dismissed for what was described as "gross misconduct and illegal action" by submitting the statements of General Kayani and Lt-Gen Pasha to the court.

The memogate controversy underlines the tension that has existed since a civilian government came to office in 2008.

Earlier this week, the supreme court issued a notice saying it could dismiss Mr Gilani if he did not follow an earlier directive to reopen corruption proceedings against the president. (© Independent News Service)

My Question is Military Coup Possible in Pakistan with current Political crisis ?

or Early elections could be called if Govt Resign's ?

In case of coup who will be in charge of Pakistan at that time?

The very $ame Kayani and Co. who are $erving U$A.

When the things fall on them it would have "serious ramifications" and could wreak "potentially grievous consequences for the country".

And when things fall on the country?

dude i disagree with you today, Gen Kiyani is not working for usa, he is just trying to keep Pakistan out of mess, he doesn't want any trouble but the government is trying its best to provoke army.

coups occured only in necessity . uptil now that situation hasnt arrived yet
army doesnt want and never wanted to get involved, its when politicians go to extreme in blunders that it happens

Zardari is in Dubai, sitting in a Cadillac, with the motorcade headed by a Dubai police BMW 5 series, and the resst of the cars being Merc S class or GMC Yukons. And at last, a old model toyota Avalon!!!

There was absoltuely no need for the PM to give a statement like that, and then Altaf Hussain says that some powers are doing this to de stabilize pak. Hence the question is, PM is a part of that power?

I wouldn't advise anyone to pay any attention to such ''Breaking News''. Electronic Media has miserably failed multiple times now. Martial is an unlikely scenario. Don't let Shaikh Rasheed's ''sources'' get to you. Hell, I'd be surprised if this government calls for early elections. The President is surrounded by some VIPs of Pakistani Politics. He knows what he's doing, besides the current COAS is spoken highly of by some reasonable personalities.

sad to see, that in this stupid, game of power in pakistan! no one has the heart to stand up & deliver the hard kick.
they all are too affraid to take on the enemy, this is a very vital time, when one should not look into this stupid (jammhuri) sytem, just shut this down & let the stupid (awam) understand that , there will be no more so called demo+crazy, if they keep giving votes to ghadari,s, chors, lootera,s?

yeah they got imran khan why should they go for military rule when half of the nation only supports it and even among them majority and the rest support imran khan and on top of it all the supreme courts are against it they want to say in the end we gave them all a chance now we rule and people will accept that ofcourse after and if imran khan fails
lets give it one more shot with imran khan if nothing then i say the country is not fit well for it......

if army wanted they would have made a coup a long time ago they dont have that support yet bcz coups only happened when people wanted it the most right now they dont have that complete support bcz of imran khans interventions people have a new hope

Military Coup is out of question. Whatever the situation is military has learned its lesson after the bitter experience of Musharaf regime. Army has recognized Judiciary's powerful existence and they know consequences of any unconstitutional step. And yes we are preparing for the early elections

i believe early elections are the only way forward . another military rule will just destroy Pakistan .

When the civil administration has failed - and more importantly, the failure is visible, and when the political leadership has failed to deliver the services to the people, then there develops an internal pressure in the society. The military, being an integral part of the society, itself gets stressed inside. The national military command then is forced to act in its own interest, in the interest of the national military and in national interest. Where the water flows then on is another matter altogether. But military coupes have happened for centuries and will happen again and again.

It is always the Men in uniform who sucks. It has always been the civilian leadership who shows that they have spine.

* It was a civilian ZA Bhutto who started Nuclear program.
* It was a civilain Benazir who started the missile program and imported the technology from N-Korea.
* It was a civilian who tested the nuclear device (Nawaz Sharif).
* It is only the civil;ain government who has dare to close the NATO supplies. and took back the shamsi air base which was handed over to USA by a bloody men in uniform.

- Whereas men in uniform failed every time. They lost the wars in 1948, 1971, Siachin, Kargil.
- It was a greedy General (Ayub Khan ) who allowed secret flights of USA U-2 jets from Pakistan for Soviet intelligence.
- It is the GHQ and its greedy generals who are kissing the USA and Pentagon toes since 1950s.
- It was a bloody military men who arrested Dr A Q Khan.
- It wa s a bloody military men (Musharaf) who pissed in His pants after (9/11) on a phone call by colonel Powel. and Handed over Pakistan soverignity to USA.
- It was the PA who surrendered in 1971 not the civilains.
- Those were Men in uniform who the Benagli women and massacred the Pakistanis in 1971.
- It is the men in uniform who killed Akbar Bughti, Bhutto, Khan of Qalat.

this is a very vital time, when one should not look into this stupid (jammhuri) sytem, just shut this down & let the stupid (awam) understand that , there will be no more so called demo+crazy, if they keep giving votes to ghadari,s, chors, lootera,s?
This is what the bloody men in uniform Think about People of Pakistan.
Some body should teach them how to respect the nation and its people.
