Army Heli Crashes in Multan

Pakistan has a limited and rather old fleet of Cobra's that it is somehow managing to keep flight-worthy despite extensive "use and abuse" during operations in FATA and Balochistan. Given the age of the fleet and the combat flight hours racked up, it is a testament to the hard work of the technicians responsible for maintaining these machines that we have not seen significantly more crashes.

You are correct, these Cobras are precious assets for us. Unfortunately, due to their extensive use in FATA they have been difficult to maintain especially due to previous sanctions. Moreover, the American stubbornness towards providing us more of them has also been a factor. No wonder we are getting Russian choppers. The Russian machines being 'Assault Helis' as opposed to just Attack, will also assist us in special ops.

Yes, but usually dust storms are pretty obvious, specially the ones in Multan.

Of course that is true, but hard work can do only so much. Look at the rising crash rates for Mirages, and now the Cobras will be no different. The new Russian helicopters will arrive in time to help out this situation in time.

I agree with you, our fleet is old and needs replacement. But than again, with a Defence Budget of less than $10 billion, what do you expect.

This is why Pakistan needs helis, the Russians better not screw Pakistan by bowing to Indian pressure.

Two pilots martyred in army helicopter crash

MULTAN: Two pilots were martyred Wednesday when an army helicopter crashed in Multan while carrying out a training exercise, military officials said.

"Two army aviation pilots embraced martyrdom when their helicopter crashed during a night flying training mission due to a technical fault at Multan tonight," the military said in a statement.

A senior military official told AFP that a dust storm that hit the aviation base as the helicopter was taking off could have been a factor in the crash.

The official and the statement did not give the type of helicopter, but army has Russian and American helicopters in its fleet. (AFP)

I agree with you, our fleet is old and needs replacement. But than again, with a Defence Budget of less than $10 billion, what do you expect.

Better management of available resources is one way of handling small budgets.

You do not order and get every thing in one year. Plan according to needs and you shall be in a better position. Critical items immediately, urgent ones next and normal after that.
