Another Indian Submarine in trouble

This is a disgrace there must be a full submarine fleet review conducted

as per Navy press release, their was some gas leak, which was brought under control, where does it say anything about charred bodies of soldiers, those who were sick were air lifted to hospital

I have checked many international sources be it Reuters, BBC, Guardian, ABC, non are reporting as badly as you guys make it seem
The sub is safe and is being moved to harbor under its own power
The soldier who were sick are being treated in hospital

I think India should really consider retiring the kilos if the same drama continues to go on and on.

India should review how it upgrade and maintain the ships. Kilos are used all over the world but its mainly Indians that has problems with them.

Going to post what I said in another thread:

The most serious issues have occurred with the aged subs ie serious damage and or (more tragically) fatalities. This is DIRECTLY caused by the age of these relics. The issues with the surface fleet are quite routine and for a navy that is already one of the largest in the world and is growing these things will happen from time to time- they are isolated incidents and one cannot claim there is something inherently wrong in the IN as a result as their training and professionalism is top-notch. IN each case individual BoIs have been set up and taken action against those in the wrong and cleared those deserving of such action.

Given the high-tempo nature of the IN such incidents are going to keep happening- what's the alternative? Keep all IN assets in their berths 365 days a year? No, danger goes with the job.

Did the Indian sub collided with another ship or sub, or did it run aground? Otherwise, you are just bringing up irrelevant examples to prop up bad maintenance of the Indian sub.

corruption is taking the lives of these good men. I wonder how the morale is of the sailors in the Navy. May be thy are looking at every system in their ship with suspicion than focusing on their jobs. Can't really blame them tho.

Navy chief Admiral DK Joshi resigns taking responsibility for submarine accidents

New Delhi: Navy Chief Admiral DK Joshi has resigned after a submarine accident off the Mumbai coast this morning. An official statement said he had stepped down taking moral responsibility for the "accidents and incidents which have taken place during the past few months." (Read Defence Ministry's statement)

Admiral Joshi is the first military chief to resign. He took charge in 2012, had more than a year left in service. The Defence Ministry immediately accepted his resignation. Vice Admiral RK Dhowan will officiate till a new chief is appointed. (Also see: Admiral DK Joshi's interview to NDTV in November 2013)

This morning, a fire reportedly broke out in the crew accommodation area of the 25-year-old Indian Navy submarine INS Sindhuratna, which was being sea tested after a refit, about 50 kilometres off the Mumbai coast. Seven sailors fell unconscious from suffocation while trying to control the fire and smoke and had to be airlifted to a Navy hospital in Mumbai. Two officers are reported missing. The senior-most submarine officer of the Western Naval Command was on board.

The submarine surfaced after the smoke was detected. The fire fighting system activated immediately and compartments were sealed automatically. Helicopters were launched for rescue.

The vessel is now on its way to Mumbai. At current speed of about three to four knots an hour, it is expected to take about 12 hours to reach.

The Russian-origin Kilo Class submarine, one of India's 14 conventional submarines, was carrying no weapons or ammunition. It had sailed out last night and since it was still being tested, had not been placed under operational command yet.

Defence Minister AK Antony briefed President Pranab Mukherjee, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the accident.

This is the 10th mishap involving an Indian Navy asset and the third submarine accident in the last seven months.

In August last year, Navy submarine INS Sindhurakshak sank in the Mumbai harbour after an explosion on board, killing 18 sailors. (Navy hopeful of reusing INS Sindhurakshak)

Earlier this month, an amphibious warfare vessel INS Airavat ran aground after which its commanding officer was stripped of his command duties.

Lets not read the unturned pages bro,don't simply jump into conclusions. Diesel subs are inherently dangerous,with little space. Battery pits are the cramped spaces even within a diesel sub,where only a single man can enter in at a time,and you have to lie on a piece of tray that slides over the batteries. Any wrong connections or a simple metal piece falling in between the batteries can cause a fire.
Also,India has been operating the Shishumar class (Indian variant of German type 209) and much advanced chakras without issues. I believe,there was something messy with the kilo upgrade .lets not please don't jump into corruption unless and until we have a reason for that.

seriously, do you still have faith in our justice system and the way they function. They will set up a high level investigation team and the report will never come to open and the culprits never jailed. Your response was well balanced and I presume you to be a smart person. Don't you feel the same way?

Back to the point, should we still run these class machines? 10 mishap in 1year is not user error its sub standard systems which are thrust on our soldiers by the dirty people up in the food chain. This needs to stop.

The Submarine is back - 'safe and sound', the air conditioning is not working :( This is not very uncommon in submarines. But what is strange(very strange) is that 2 officers are missing. 7 are injured due to asphyxiation - though this is expected. It takes time for a submerged submarine to resurface. But the missing 2 officers is very very unusual - how could two Indian Navy officers go missing for an enclosed submarine in the middle of the sea? :what:

@kurup - My bad :( and thanks... shutting down compartments is common - in that case... :cry:

1. It is not a nuclear submarine .

2. Once they detect fire and smoke , they close down affected compartments . They must be stuck in one of them.

3. According to post#69 freon is lethal if ingested . So the chances of them alive is slim.
