Iran Air Flight 655 was an Iran Air flight from Bandar Abbas, Iran to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

On 3 July 1988, the aircraft serving the flight, an Airbus A300B2-203, was shot down by U.S. missiles fired by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes as it flew over the Strait of Hormuz.

The aircraft, which had been flying in Iranian airspace over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf on its usual flight path, was destroyed.

All 290 onboard, including 66 children and 16 crew, perished. Ranking seventh among the deadliest disasters in aviation history, the incident retains the highest death toll of any aviation incident in the Indian Ocean and the highest death toll of any incident involving an Airbus A300 anywhere in the world.

Nationalities of the victims

According to the documents submitted to the International Court of Justice by Iran, the aircraft was carrying 290 people: 274 passengers and a crew of 16. Of these 290,

254 were Iranian nationals
13 were nationals of the United Arab Emirates
10 of India
6 of Pakistan
6 of Yugoslavia
1 of Italy.

Medals awarded to Americans for killing 290 civilians

The men of the Vincennes were all awarded Combat Action Ribbons for completion of their tours in a combat zone. Lustig, the air-warfare coordinator, received the Navy Commendation Medal, often given for acts of heroism or meritorious service, but a not-uncommon end-of-tour medal for a second tour division officer. According to the History Channel, the medal citation noted his ability to "quickly and precisely complete the firing procedure.

Very sad.RIP

Did the US offered any compensation to the victims.

The U.S. government issued notes of regret for the loss of innocent human life. The government never admitted wrongdoing, and did not accept responsibility nor submit an apology to the Iranian government.

In February 1996, the United States agreed to pay Iran US$131.8 million in settlement to discontinue a case brought by Iran in 1989 against the U.S. in the International Court of Justice relating to this incident, together with other earlier claims before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. US$61.8 million of the claim was in compensation for the 248 Iranians killed in the shoot-down ($300,000 per wage-earning victim, $150,000 per non-wage-earner). In total 290 civilians on board (including 38 non-Iranians and 66 children) were killed. It was not disclosed how the remaining $70 million of the settlement was apportioned, though it appears a close approximation of the value of a used A300 jet at the time. Further compensation was paid for the 38 non-Iranian deaths. The payment of compensation was explicitly characterized by the US as being on an ex gratia basis, and the U.S. denied having any responsibility or liability for what happened.

This was a terrorist act, even though American officials tried to say it was a "mistake", it's obvious they did it on purpose, revenge for what happened in 1979 and failure of Operation Eagle Claw.

But sometimes you have to move on, that doesn't mean we have to forget the victims.

I think its time to move on, Iran should have better relation with all countries, imagine how rich and prosperous your country will be, and also have much more say in global arena.

Iran has very good relationship with many countries around the world, and has many good friends in global arena. You can look at all the countries Iran has good relations with. We even have economical relationship with America, even though we don't have diplomatic relationship.

My dear, everyday they accuse us of sponsoring terrorism (without giving any proof and just in the media) and even recently they accused Iran of being behind 9/11 attacks! after attacking and destroying 2 countries for it, Iraq and Afghanistan. That was just an excuse to freeze more Iran's assets in U.S and give it to victims to keep them silent.
So, it's not always possible to move on easily, especially when the country standing against you and accusing you of being a terrorist gives medal of honor and bravery to the general who 'courageously' ordered to burn 290 'dangerous terrorists including babies and women' alive in a civilian airliner.

We do want good relations with all countries, including U.S, but as long as it's based on mutual respect, not someone keeping a hammer above your head and saying: Ok, let's sit and talk.
