Iran Air Confirms Cancellation of Early Boeing Delivery

Iran Air has confirmed the cancellation of the earlier-than-expected delivery of a Boeing 777-300ER as part of a $17 billion order from the American planemaker.

The cancellation came after deputy minister of roads and urban development, Asghar Fakhrieh-Kashan, announced this month that Boeing had offered the jet to Iran Air after Turkish Airlines canceled its order ahead of delivery. He said Iran Air was studying the specification of the wide-body jet and that Iran expected a delivery within weeks.

Iran Air CEO Farhad Parvaresh has been quoted by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development’s news service as saying that his company had welcomed Boeing’s offer and that after performing technical and financial assessment it was close to receiving the plane, “but the plane was not available anymore”.

He did not elaborate as to why the delivery was cancelled.

After lengthy negotiations following the nuclear deal Iran signed in 2015 with world powers, Boeing secured a contract in December 2016 with Iran Air for the sale of 80 planes—the first such dealing in decades.

The order includes 50 of Boeing’s narrow-body 737max 8s, 15 wide-body 777-300ERs and 15 777-9s, which will be delivered to Iran Air over 10 years.

The canceled delivery would have cut short the long waiting period for Iran Air to receive its first Boeing jet.

Before the Iran Air CEO’s announcement, unofficial sources had reported that the deal was canceled. An aviation outlet, which is said to be associated with the United States’ Paine Field Airport, initially cited sources in both Boeing and Iran Air as saying that the deal was “dead” because “Turkish has decided to take delivery of TC-LJK”.

Soon after, reports by certain local media close to opponents of the government of President Hassan Rouhani claimed that the delivery had been cancelled due to Iran Air’s inability to afford the payment of the first installment, amounting to $75 million.

Parvaresh dismissed the claim as unfounded.

Industry analysts had been doubtful about the delivery of the Boeing 777 from the start, as Turkish Airlines had paid almost all the cash needed to purchase the plane.

“It is very strange that Turkish Airlines would cancel an order so late in the build process when they had already paid millions in pre-delivery payments and this comes just days after the airline accepted the delivery of a new, lease Airbus A330 from Intrepid Aviation,” Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at StrategicAero Research, told Financial Tribune earlier this month.

This deal that was imposed on negotiating team alongside with JCPOA, looks like canceled under US imposed sanctions.

Nevertheless, Iran had already some local plans to develop a reliable civilian airplane with looking at Iranian requirements :

Budget problems was the reason of this treason to local industries.

In the meantime, Iran could have other alternatives that could fit Iran's local requirement to a civilian plane.
Such as Russian Super-Sukhoi-100.

@mohsen

I knew from the start , that this deal (Boeing) is not reliable
any way Airbus & Sukhoi are good alternatives. :coffee:

I still prefer local industries.

This deal was not based on Iran's long term benefits, it had political reasons. They had to accept a bad deal to make an other bad ensured. Even airbus is importing sensitive parts of engines from Boeing. Super Sukhoi has the same conditions.

BTW Iran's engineers have no lack of science or capabilities, they just need attention. 18 Bn $ could make Iran an emerging power in that field. Believe me bro, this government is the most incompetent among our previous elected governments/presidents. Wrong calculations of political situation is leading them to disaster.

Fortunately Iran's leadership has kept the country away from falling into US-hands. And still we can proudly say that Iran is an independent country in the middle east.

If Iran has such an enmity with USA, why are they even considering Boeing especially when Airbus offers good alternatives in each category.

As i said, it already looks canceled. Not to mention

It was a political mess, made by our government. Hopefully they have learned their lessons, and they are not going to repeat the same mistakes.

Note that Iran doesn't have military relations with US regime, these deals are being singed by civilian companies such as Mahan air with government's green light. Thanks to big mouth Trump, it is already canceled

So it got cancelled because of Trump and not because of Tehran. May be they wanted to please USA and get some better relations perhaps they thought if they buy from Boeing, the US travel ban on Iran will vanish.

Nope, this deal was signed before Trump administration. A side effect of JCPOA

Maybe you were right and our leftist governors had this dream, but as you know, it doesn't represent our leadership. Hopefully you get the point

That 1 or 2 months was crazy, iran was acting as if its the end of the world.
What was so hurry, first they should have settled main deal and then could have gone on this shopping spree.

Okay thanks for the info.

From economic point of view getting something from 1 source is just wrong ...
it will reduce Iran's negotiation power in future deals for airliners or higher costs and more delays ...
it is good deal to get widebody airliners from american supplier for both political and economical reasons
there is much more into this ..

Well, the problem is, due to our small number of passengers who used airliners, we don't need those big planes.

If we want to have a developed country , we don't need wide body planes. We need railways and civil projects. Throwing 18 Bn into trash was a grave mistake. Imagine what we could do with that money.

At least we could develop a homemade fighter jet or import squadrons of SU-30Sm fighter jet, long range defense systems etc.
