It has more to do with language , then looks , Hindi/Urdu is spoken in north india . Rest of india speak their own native langs. In earlier days Hindi movies was watched mosly in north india , hence punjabi lead actors or even muslims were preferred as they spoke the hindi/Urdu language well and with flair that others couldn't . Once these bunch got established and they have dominated Bollywood for long e,g the Kapoor Family .
Beside this lead female actors were either South Indians or Bengalis , as Bollywood saw those regions where it wanted to market their films.
