DHAKA, Nov 6, 2012 (BSS)- India's Ashok Leyland completed the delivery of 290 double-decker buses as the last lot of 23 buses arrived at Chaitipur BRTC depot on October 30.

"The delivery of the 290 double-decker buses started in March 2012. Presently 180 buses are plying on the roads of Dhaka and 110 buses are at the depot ready for distribution," said a press release issued by Indian High Commission in Dhaka today.

The project for procurement of 290 double-decker buses for Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), amounting to US$ 23.32 million, was approved under the $1.0 billion Indian Line of Credit.

The contract for this was awarded to M/s Ashok Leyland Ltd, India, and came into effect in September, 2011.

Along with the 290 buses, two truck-loads of spare parts have also arrived. Maintenance of these buses is covered under warranty period of one year or 40,000 kilometers, whichever is earlier.

Ashok Leyland has set up six workshops in Dhaka including one at the Chaitipur Depot. The BRTC Depot at Chaitipur also houses a training centre for drivers. So far 100 drivers have been trained to drive the double-decker buses.

Two more contracts for supply of 88 air-conditioned buses and 50 articulated buses have been signed between BRTC and M/s Ashok Leyland Ltd, India, under the Indian credit line. The delivery of these buses is expected to commence in December 2012,
and will be completed by April 2013.

"Due to concerted efforts made by both the countries there is considerable progress in the implementation of the projects under the Indian Credit Line," said the high commission.

A total of 10 contracts have already been signed for supply of buses, tank wagons, diesel locomotives, flat wagons, consultancy for new rail lines and railway bridges. Deliveries of 165 broad gauge tank wagons with 6 brake vans, 81 meter gauge tank wagons with 3 brake vans and 6 diesel locomotives are expected to begin in the first half of next year.

It is also expected that the construction work of the 2nd Bhairab Rail Bridge over Meghna river, 2nd Rail Bridge over Titas river and 3rd and 4th line between Dhaka-Tongi would commence next year.

India has reduced the credit component of the $1.0 billion Line of credit by converting $200 million into grant. The interest rate on the credit component has been reduced to 1 percent from 1.75 percent.

The condition of minimum Indian content for projects under the Line of Credit (LOC) has also been relaxed from 85 percent to 75 percent. For projects involving civil construction, Indian content has been relaxed to 65 percent. It has also been agreed that further requirement of reduction in Indian content beyond 65 percent would be considered on a case to case basis, provided sourcing is not from a third country.

In case of the procurement of dredgers, the Indian content has been reduced to 30 percent.
 
From the article it seems that the cooperation is going well between the two countries.

By the how are these new Ashok Leyland's bus performing in Bangladesh climate?
 
These buses look ugly, bd shoud take some more credit and but top quality and good looking buses from other Indian companies.
 
1.Tipu, a brother of the disgraceful Gen MUA, owns Ifad which has been agent of Ashok Leyland. MUA's covert friendship with India might have been established through this channel.

2. In some of the earlier deals Ashok Leyland had supplied vehicles with engines of lower HP than specified.

1.Tipu, a brother of the disgraceful Gen MUA, owns Ifad which has been agent of Ashok Leyland. MUA's covert friendship with India might have been established through this channel.

2. In some of the earlier deals Ashok Leyland had supplied vehicles with engines of lower HP than specified.

You have your head in the wrong place for sure.

1.Not only in these double-deckers, but also in the normal buses India supplied under credit to BRTC (govt transport corp), lower CC engines were put in to make profit for the Indian supplier. This was subsequently detected and reported in the media. An inquiry was instituted and the affair was somehow forgotten. That was Ershad era.

2. As it is Indian vehicles are junk. And with all those gymnastics our transport sector has suffered.

any company vehicles will become junk within year in mighty bd capital...... lolz first build roads then talk about quality..... dokku bandlaku dikku ledu gani yedavalaku world class bandlu kavali....

Before you blabber a silly reply why don't you find out the conditions for an Indian Credit?

Be happy our conditions is lenient, if you went for Chinese they have made you not to employ even a single Bangladeshi for the projects and you know reputation Chinese goods. :woot:
