Alamgir Class Frigate

Just because ur getting some eight 30 yrs old used frigate makes it equivalent to all modern day ones

note if india was getting these it would be called "Junk class" ....such hypocrites

Since you introduce the term "Junk class" and speak about hypocrisy, what about the INS Jalashwa (former USS Trenton LPD 14)? Or INS Viraat (former HMS Hermes R12)? Or INS Vikramaditya (former Admiral Gorshkov TAKR). Are the useless just because they are old?

Are the ex-RN Type 22s in service with Brazil (4), Chile (1) and Rumania (2) junk? Or the slighty smaller ex-Dutch L-frigates sold to Chile (2), or the ex-Dutch S-frigates from which they derive and which were sold to Greece (8) and the United Arab Emirates (2)? They are contemporary's of the Oliver Hazard Perry that are, apparently, still much in demand because of their remaining potential. Indeed, it is only after 2014 that the German navy will start retiring the oldest 4 of the S-frigate derived and highly similar 8 F122 Bremen class ships that to this day are the backbone of the German navy, to make room for the much larger and more 'expeditionary' F125. The F122s were first commissioned in 1982. I would put that old clunker up against a Talwar any day.

Oh, and did I mention that equally old domestic variants of the OHP remain in frontline service with the navies of Australia (with SM2 and ESSM missiles), Spain, and Taiwan (with Hsiung Feng III supersonic AShM, versus 054A!). Not to mention the users of ex-USN OHPs (Turkey 8+1, Egypt 4, Poland 2, Bahrain 1). These navies can't all be wrong, let alone qualitatively inferior to IN.

Can we all please check the nationalistic attitudes at the door?

No sir they don't come into junk class according to Indian members because these platforms belong to Indian navy. Junk class only applies to Pakistan and it's navy.

And please tell me which country is Asia has JUNK comparable to Virrat or Vikrant Class??

Of course these 30 years old ships are not useless but they are not as good as current ships.

Of course we can? Why not? The apparent issue was age versus functionality/lethality.

There is some similar, though new built Japanese and South Korean junk (Hyuga and Dokdo) , that I would not venture to underrate... nor would I underrate the Chinese refittedVaryag, when it gets out there.

Meanwhile, even the Brazilians have managed to secure a 'used' carrier that is newer and in many respects more modern than that of India (but, ok, that's South America).

I feel that the discussion on the OHPs is simply going in circles with the same points being repeated over and over again. Let's be frank. The PN is after a total of 8 OHPs, and the refurbishment cost for the first ship doesn't seem to cover extensive upgrades. Fair enough, but there are still 7 other ships, and there is still the fact that PN has the option to upgrade its OHPs after it acquires them. Pakistan can approach the U.S. for systems such as Mk.41 VLS, ESSM, and perhaps even RAM...how much more sensitive can these systems be compared to Block-52+, AMRAAM, JDAM, Hawkeye-2000, etc? All we need to do is wait and see, and not dumb ourselves into thinking that the PN will waste its resources on 8 glorified gunboats.

McInerney commissioned 15 December 1979. That makes it just over 30 years old today. Next oldeast OHP in USN service is Boone (FFG-28), which commissioned 15 May 1982 and is thus a good 2,5 years younger. Most of the 29 currently remaining ships in USN service are from 1983-1986. Considering some Knox class ships (a good 10 years older than the oldest surviving OHP) are still in active foreign servce, as well as the history of other ex-USN ships transferred (including to PN), as well as the life expectancy of modernized OHPs in Australian and Turkish service, PN should be able to get more than 10, maybe 15 years worth of service out of these, with relative ease.

Is there any word on if the Pakistan will choose the Genesis Program for the upgrades ? Or will they be buying specific weapons systems rather then a complete upgrade program ?
