Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) which was tasked to work on India’s first Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) has informed that it is nearing completion. shore-based test facility (SBTF) will be a exact replica of IAC (Indigenous aircraft carrier)-1 which has been under construction at Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL).

SBTF will be used to simulate an aircraft carrier for full-fledged flight testing of ship-borne attack aircraft as well as for training pilots.shore-based test facility (SBTF) project will be first such facility in South Asia and the third in the world. The US and Ukraine have a similar facility.Project was to be completed by end of 2012 but GSL co-coordinator for this project faced delays in procurement of ABA Ship building steel for the project.

INS Hansa Naval Air Station also is Goa’s lone International Airport , Goans have been demanding Indian navy handover and vacate area surrounding it for Airport expansion and move, Sharing a Naval Air Base with Airport has lead to airport been closed for hours at a time for Naval flights every day , Goa wants to build another International airport in Mopa area but Goans feel that close proximity of Proposed airport project Near Maharashtra Border will benefit Neighboring state more then Goans since current Airport is more centrally located then Mopa .

Chief minister of Goa has asked Navy to move to Mopa and promised land will be provided to Navy for free , but it is highly unlikely that Navy after investing heavily in development of Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) in INS Hansa will be ready to move , SBTF will also be able to operate any aircraft which Indian navy may operate in future for carrier operations that includes Naval Tejas and Mig-29k , INS Hansa will become Carrier Fighter training base for Indian Navy and tussle with Civilian administration over control of Airport and flight restriction is all set to accelerate .

Flights in and out of Goa are only permitted from noon to evenings, the Navy uses the airport for the rest of time, also the main terminal is quite small.

Goa should set up another Internaional airport elsewhere for sure. The IN is well and truly entrenched at INS HANSA and the IN has spent billions in setting up infrastructure for supporting and training on fighter jets.

Stepping over each other is only going to lead to issues for both the civilians and military in the future. With Goa becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination it needs a world class international and dedicated airport. Goa risks being left behind on this front whilst all other Indian states get such airports.

Agree, the same happened in Bangalore - HAL was using the facility along with civilian airlines and they had to relocate to allow expansion, The airport in Goa is 40 KMS away from it's two main cities - Panaji and Madgaon, Goa has a lot free space - another easily accessible location should be selected for a civilian airport.

Yes, the present airport should be handed over to the navy, a new airport somewhere closer to the main cities would be nice - though Vasco, where the present airport is located is bang in the middle of both Panjim and Margaon and is equidistant from both, and Vasco is a decent sized city too with Goa's port quite close to the airport. The main tourist spots though are quite far from the airport and requires a long drive, but the roads are excellent and not too much congested.

The Navy should pack its bags and depart from Goa. The state is far too small to accommodate another airport. Karwar is only down the road and is a naval base to boot and it has vast real estate at its disposal; base the navy there.
Dabolim should be a civilian airport and not be used by the armed services.

Mopa is close to Maharashtra and travel time from south Goa to airport will go up , ex Margao to current airport is 24km but from margao to mopa it will be 70 km and by the way margao is commercial capital of Goa , so People from south think that not only they will have to travel more , will also receive less tourists in south since airport will be close to all the happening beaches in north .Dabolim is more centrally located .

Even i feel Navy should move down to Karwar it big enough and there are coming up with Naval air base there too , Many Goans i spoke to feel that Navy is there only for Holidaying

Margao to Dabolim airport -- 24 km

Panjim to Dabolim airport -- 27

Mapusa to Dabolim airport -- 35 km

Ponda to Dabolim airport -- 32 km

Then what is this article whining about? IDRW up to its sensationalism again?!

What does IDRW whine about all the time...EVERYTHING under the sun!

Scrap Rafale for Tejas.

Indian Navy ain't got no subs.

Carriers are for pussies.

Leave em' be...irritating dimwits.

So you guys have now resorted to white chalk and sticky tape? Austerity measures must really be kicking !

Don't really know what a SBTF is do you? Well either that or you need to read the OP's article first before commenting.
