Air force to buy long-range radar by Tk 147cr

So what? :undecided:

Do you expect a massed air strike from India?
Do you expect to defend a massed air strike from India?
Do you expect a greater threat from air than from sea?
Do you expect that Myanmar is a lesser threat than India?

If this news is true, it is a bone-headed decision, and someone in the Air Force needs to lose his job.

I used to think Barishal is closer to Myanmar than India.

The Bangladesh Air Force is going to purchase a long-range air defence radar to be set up in Barisal to bolster security system in the southern region, officials said.
The cost of the radar to be supplied by Finmeccanica of Italy has been fixed at Tk 147 crore.
Finmeccanica, also known as Leonardo, was selected by the air force in June from amongst five bidders for the deal.
Thales Raytheon System of France, Poly Technologies Inc and CETC of China and ANPC of the United States also competed in the bid.
Officials said that the air force had planned to pay the price in three phases with Tk 110 crore in the current financial year.

The air force sent a letter to the finance ministry for its approval for the payment of instalments to the supplier from the budgetary allocations.
The letter said that the radar would be commissioned in Barisal as part of the Forces Goal Vision 2030.
According to the Forces Goal Vision 2030, the air force has long-term procurement plans including acquiring new generation fighter aircraft between 2020 and 2025.
It received Yakovlev Yak-130 multi-role helicopter and AgustaWestland AW139 search and rescue helicopter on December 6, 2015.
The air force also purchased 24 training-cum-combat aircraft from Russia under $1 billion supplier’s credit in 2012.

The radar will cost around 20 million US dollars. It will be very effective in providing surveillance over the whole of Southern regions of BD and neighbouring areas.

Calm down dude.

BD does not expect a massed air-strike from India with the current relationship between the two countries. However, India may be friendly now but who knows the situation 1-2 decades down the line.

This radar is a long-ranged(500kms) one and Barisal is the perfect location to look deep into both West Bengal and Myanmar.

@Nilgiri :

Your thoughts sir as you said that India does not allow BD to purchase anything that will become a threat to it. This radar has range of 500km and will be able to look deep into W Bengal from it's location in Barisal.

LOL.

I am calm.

It's just that this is such an asinine step that it takes away all respect for the decision makers. What happens if India takes a hostile attitude towards BD? Will the radar help in any way? And, oh, don't call me 'dude'. I'm not your age, nor your friend. :D

The radar will help as it will be able to give BD advance notice of what is happening rather than a surprise out of the blue.
It will eventually be augmented by AWACs, powerful radars from frigates and hopefully destroyers out in the Bay of Bengal and sizeable number of modern fighter aircraft.

BD needs to plan for capabilities that neighbours have and it will be negligent not to build up it's capabilities. No reason for any sort of hostilities between India, BD or Myanmar but each country has the right to build whatever capabilities it thinks it needs for defence.

This is a waste of time.

If you stopped your Walter Mitty dreaming, you would realise how vulnerable Bangladesh is to India if India should turn hostile at any point of time. The flying time is so short that there would be no time for any kind of reaction, whether or not you have an AWACS up, or frigates and destroyers in the Bay. Your frigates and destroyers would be the first to vanish, followed by electronics signal sources.

I must be mad to be wasting my time with someone whose military knowledge is restricted to product catalogues.

OK dude, believe whatever you want as BD will just keep on building up it's military capabilities.
This is BD money and country and it will do whatever it wants and India has no say in the matter.

Call me dude once more and you will start feeling the pain.

As for the rest, a fool and his money are soon parted.

.
Oh god, what on earth are Indians getting involved in the matters of a sovereign country?

BD is a sovereign country and will do as it likes with it's money.

.
What's India s problem let BD do whatever they want with their hard earned money they don't pose a threat to India mate

. .
What's the point? Its a waste of precious resources. A single wing of Indian air force can do better job protecting BD air space. BD should rethink its current policy of buying such military hardware.
