Ahmadinejad says Iran has no need of nuclear arms

WASHINGTON: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday Tehran has no need of nuclear arms, but in an interview with a US television did not explicitly rule them out.

"Nuclear arms we believe they belong to the past and the past generation....We do not see any need for such weapons," Ahmadinejad said.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that he regretted the deaths of protestors during demonstrations, which erupted after Iran's disputed June elections.

"All of us regret the fact that some people were killed," Ahmadinejad told media television, in excerpts of the interview which is to be aired in full on Sunday.

Ahmadinejad's June 12 re-election unleashed massive street protests that shook the Islamic regime and divided the ruling elites and powerful clerical groups.

The unrest officially left about 30 people dead -- opposition groups claim 72 died -- and isolated Iran even further from world powers who are threatening fresh sanctions over the country's suspect nuclear program.

The Iranian president added he had also been saddened by the death of a young woman, Neda Agha-Soltan, whose killing during a protest rally in Tehran generated an international outcry.

"I was saddened, as well all the Iranian people were saddened," he told media Thursday.

But he added, "We think that this incident is a suspicious death. We are treating it as a suspicious death. We are very sorry about this and I am sure that the truth will come to light."

Neda, as she is more commonly known, became an icon for the opposition, which is protesting Ahmadinejad's re-election, after an Internet video showing her final moments was seen around the world.

Ahmadinejad has already called for a probe into her death, saying there had been fabricated reports about the incident and "widespread propaganda" by the foreign media.

The street protests were the worst violence to rock Iran in the 30-year history of the Islamic republic.

Around 4,000 protesters who opposed Ahmadinejad were initially arrested. While most of them have since been released, 140 have been put on trial including leading reformist politicians, activists and employees of the British and French embassies.

I beg your pardon,

he has never said that Iran wants or needs nuclear arms - only nuclear energy, which is the right of every nation quite frankly.

I don’t give a toss, the coverers of the truth and minions thereof can talk about whatever they want.

If this guys is that smart he just clear this idea long time ago,

Your English is illegible for which reason I cannot respond.

that what is the main purpose of its nuclear?

Iran maintains, as it always has done, that it is perusing nuclear energy; and the so called nuclear regulatory body, agrees with the Iranian assertions.

You said that Iran keeps changing its tone – however this is not the case. Their tone is the same; however, I do suspect they may have a different agenda which I fully endorse.

Ahmadenee Nijad deserves respect. He is not ruling the country because it makes him "feel good".. but because his Nation needs the man like him. Americans, British and the western powers are against him because he talks of his National Interest instead of their National Interests. He is patriot and a cultured person who knows what are is limitations and strengths and has always stood upfront to face challenges, never letting his nation down. He is man of respect and knows what does national pride mean. He is a million times better president if we want to compare him with ours.

let me ask you a question. did Pakistan openly state that they wanted nuclear weapons when they were developing them in secret? It is in Iran's best interest to not admit to it. There is a reason that the I.A.E.A is still not allowed into some of the nuclear facilities in Iran. If it was as peaceful as Iran claims they would have nothing to worry about in letting inspectors in. In fact it would help their case even more.

a large part of the Iranian nation would disagree with you. which is why he had to steal the last election to stay in office.

A "large part" does not comprise a majority. Most Iranians support him.

Iran's total population is not 40,000. Had Nation been against him, they must have turned out in millions specially after people died during the protest. They steal the elections or not is not known. Your Secret Services are not credible to be believed on that.

not really the hard liners have pretty much made known they will not tolerate dissent. whatever the number of people marching. it is simply a symbolic number. to remind people that the election was stolen. It does not take a rocket scientist to see the hard line mullahs will do anything to have their man stay in power. and the people know that.

You can take that figure as a bit of statistical sampling of the population at large. You had better believe that for every one person who mustered up enough courage to expose him/herself to danger to march in protest, there are at least five or more who shared the same discontent and at least 10 or more who have doubts but not yet ready to make a decision. Tens of thousands is a serious figure.
