Despite protests by Pakistan, cross-border attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistani territory continue unabated which confirm widely held perception that these are part of bigger agenda to put more pressure on the country. In the latest development, Afghan National Army troops on Sunday evening fired mortar rounds from KK top killing four civilians including two children in north of Niz Narai. As usual, Pakistan has again lodged protest with Kabul Government but it is understood that it would fall on deaf ears.

There are three types of provocations from across the Durand Line — crossing of border by Afghan militants after regular intervals to attack border villages on Pakistani side beside indulging in looting; violation of Pakistan’s territory and air space by coalition forces and attacks by Afghan National Army. The very fact that NATO and Afghan forces themselves indulge into these provocations substantiate the belief that raids by Afghan militants have tacit approval of occupation forces and Afghan Government. Also the Afghan government and the US led NATO forces are providing safe havens to Mulla Fazlullah and his bunch of militants in Kunar province along border with Pakistan who is used to launch attacks on security checkposts and civilians.

The latest incident comes at a time when a delegation of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council, led by Chairman Salahuddin Rabbani, was to hold talks with Pakistani authorities seeking assistance for bringing Afghan Taliban on negotiating table. It is strange that on the one side Afghans and NATO want Pakistan to cooperate in peace talks but on the other hand they are carrying out aggression every now and then against the country. Be it Salala attack or similar other incidents, these are clear manifestation of a calculated approach by coalition forces to pressurise Pakistan to submit to their plans vis-à-vis post-US withdrawal period in Afghanistan irrespective of the fact whether or not these suit Pakistan’s national interest. Their designs are evident from moves to help India establish its foothold not only in defence and security arenas of Afghanistan but also in other sectors and the objective is clearly to assign a greater role to New Delhi in Afghan affairs in the post-withdrawal period. These attacks should serve as a wake-up call for our policy-makers who should ponder over the situation minutely and prepare counter strategy to effectively safeguard our own interests.

When Indians want more subsidy on transit from Pakistan, it use such pressurizing tactics via Afghanistan.

Give few billion more to Indians in shape of duty exemption and they will sit quite.
