Warrants for 3 Iranians over attack on Israeli diplomat

A week after a Delhi journalist working for an Iranian news agency was arrested for his alleged role in the February 13 bomb attack on an Israeli diplomat, a city court today issued non-bailable warrants against three Iranian nationals in the case.

The names of the three Iranians will be passed on to Interpol since police believe these men were involved in “the conspiracy, recce and execution of the attack”.

A source said the Special Team of Delhi Police approached the Tis Hazari court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav with a request to issue warrants against Housan Afshar, Syed Ali Mehdi Sadr and Mohammad Reza Abolghasemi.

One of them allegedly stuck the bomb on the Israel Embassy Toyota Innova, targeting diplomat Tal Yehoshua-Koren on Aurangzeb Road as she was going to fetch her children from school.

The source claimed that Afshar, who is in his mid-30s, used the Scooty that police recovered from the house of journalist Mohammed Ahmad Kazmi when they arrested him last week. The Scooty, the source said, was used for “reconnaissance and providing logistical support” in the days before the attack.

“They had entered the country during different times and did not leave together. We have their travel details,” the source said.

The trio, the source said, were in Delhi for almost a month and had stayed in a Paharganj hotel. It is suspected that the bomb was assembled locally.

On March 7, while seeking 20 days’ police custody for Kazmi, public prosecutor Rajiv Mohan told the court: “This is a case of international terrorism. It is not necessary that only Indians are involved in this case. There is a possibility that some foreign nationals might be involved in the case. We have already recorded statements of the eyewitnesses to the incident. The conspiracy was hatched outside India. We do not want to disclose all information in the open court as the main accused, who is yet to be arrested, could go out of reach of the probe agency.”

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Thursday confirmed Iranian link to the Iranian Embassy car attack case. The Delhi Police has identified 3 Iranians who were allegedly involved in the terror attack that left a diplomat's wife injured.

A court has issued non-bailable warrants against them.

Meanwhile, the only person to be detained, Indian journalist Syed Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi is said to have been a part of the conspiracy since 2011.

He was arrested on March 6 in connection with the February 13 blast. A delegation of MPs led by Trinamool Congress's Sultan Ahmed had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday to demand his release.

The PM assured them that Kazmi would get a fair trial.

On Monday, Israeli National Security Adviser Yaakov Amidror met with Home Minister P Chidambaram in connection with the case.
