INS Viraat, India's second aircraft carrier, was commissioned in 1987 and continues to serve the nation.
The carrier is all set to take a new avatar as a tourist attraction in the beach off Visakhapatnam after decommissioning
The Andhra Pradesh government has set in motion the formal process of acquiring the Centre’s clearance for stationing INS Viraat, the last British ship serving the Indian Navy, once it is decommissioned in 2016.

The oldest aircraft carrier in the world is all set to take a new avatar as an important tourist attraction in the beach off Visakhapatnam after its decommissioning. INS Viraat has been serving the Navy for the last 56 years.

“The aircraft carrier with a huge built-up space could be turned into a museum or a hotel or a mini-township at an expenditure of around Rs. 200 crore in the Public-Private Partnership mode. If it is anchored in the sea, instead of the beach, tourists will be taken on boats to the warship,” official sources said.

INS Viraat, which was launched in 1953 and acquired by India and commissioned in 1987, is slated to get a grand farewell at the International Fleet Review in Visakhapatnam in February next year.

The idea is if all clearances are in place, then once INS Viraat is decommissioned in Visakhapatnam, its possession could be taken by from there itself, sources added.

It would be like USS INTREPID, CV-11, MUSEUM, NEW YORK, NY

They certainly can if Chinese can build a casino out of carriers! But anyway 200 crore budget is not for only a museum imo

AP should salvage money for its capital. Honestly reading its fiscal position, even 200Cr is big expenditure for them.

It is a great shame that this wasn't done for INS Vikrant that actually played a considerable role in India's most defining military engagement (1971 war). And whilst the Viraat has been ever ready to pursue the interests of her nation, she has had a significantly less noteworthy role in India's military history other than the longevity of her service.

Mangaluru comes forward to house INS Viraat - The Hindu

Ministry of Defence has been consulting State Govt. on berthing this ship at a suitable location.
Following the proposal by the Andhra Pradesh government, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has proposed to house INS Viraat, the last British ship serving the Indian Navy, after its decommissioning in 2016.

The Ministry of Defence is considering converting this aircraft carrier, which has served for 56 years, into a self-sustaining Aircraft Carrier Museum on the lines of U.S. Navy’s Aircraft Carrier Museum. This museum will also have memorabilia from INS Vikrant, and highlight the history of naval aviation and the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict.

The Ministry has been consulting State governments on berthing this ship at a suitable location. One among the places proposed has been Mangaluru.

Expressing interest in having the museum in Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada District Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim had on July 14 written to Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee. The city was known for its good naval facility and having a museum here will inspire more youngsters in the region to join the armed forces.

Mr. Ibrahim said a naval ship museum has been set up in Karwar while a submarine ship museum has been set up in Vishakapatnam.
