Seeking to further strengthen the Navy's capabilities, the defence ministry has cleared a proposal worth Rs 20,000 crore to buy four state-of-the-art warships equipped with the deadly BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

Two would be built in Russia and the other two in India, in a project crucial for the Navy which has been asking for additional warships to maintain its 'blue water' capabilities - the ability to carry out operations in high seas, far away from its waters.

GSL chief rear admiral Shekhar Mittal said they have already started working in this direction and are ready for construction of such big warships.

'We are already working on the project as our shipyard was recently modified to undertake the construction and integration of such weapon intensive platforms,' Mittal told Mail Today over phone.

After approval by the defence acquisition council (DAC) headed by defence minister Manohar Parrikar, the Navy will now move towards preparing a commercial note for the project after getting price quotes from the Russian side and other vendors to be involved in the programme.

Once the commercial and other related negotiations are done, the project will be sent across to the cabinet committee on security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for final approval, sources said.

The vessels would be the follow-on warships of the Talwar class frigates, six of which are already in the Navy and are known as project 11356 in the Russian Navy.

Once the project starts, the GSL would take four years to start delivering the ships.

The six previous warships of the Talwar class are already serving in the Navy and equipped with potent anti-ship missiles including the Russian Klub and BrahMos.

They are Talwar, Trishul, Tabar, Teg, Tarkash and Trikand.

Built fully in Russia, the first three have the Klub as their main weapon, while the rest have BrahMos as its major anti-ship arsenal.

The locally-built warships will be manufactured by Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL) at its Vasco Da Gama facility, while the Yantar shipyard, which has delivered similar vessels for the Indian Navy in the past too, will build the other two warships, defence sources said.

The Yantar shipyard has faced some problems in manufacturing the warships as the engines are built in Ukraine, which is not in good terms with Moscow at the moment.

Sources in the GSL said the major portion of the weapon-intensive platforms would be made in India and more than 50 per cent of it would be built here.

'Surface-to-air missiles, including Shtil-1, would be from Russia, but we are going to involve a lot of equipments such as electronic warfare components from India,' they said.

The Navy has also given its mine counter-measure vessels (MCMVs) project worth Rs 32,000 crore to GSL. It has tied up with South Korean shipyard Kangnam to build 12 such boats.

Senior defence ministry sources said Parrikar was a bit hesitant to nominate GSL for the project, but it was the only public sector shipyard available for completing the project.

Others, such as Mazagon Dockyards Limited and GRSE, are busy with other important projects and almost working on full capacity.

$1 bn for one ship very expansive better to modify p-28 to light frigate and add what ever u want.

I don't understand IN policy of ordering in traches of 3-4!! Instead they should go for a modular design and upgrade them progressively by ordering 8-10 ships per class!! Huge orders will bring the cost down!

There may be 2 reasons.
1) we may not have the capacity to bring in time all 4 ships when required.
2) Russian may be cheap and some technology transfer consideration may be there.

Bro.. 2 ships are being build by India.. I don't see the fuzz why they can't build2 more in India with our own program.

1 billion a ship is not cheap bro.. not at all when we;ve the same ability build such ships..
they're defiantly not going to transfer any core techs to us... and i think the two ships that're going to come from Russia will be without engine and are already build 5 years ago

First We need to know that this is the follow on for the Talwar Class

2 Hulls where were to be built (in the process of being completed) for the RuN isn't complete because of issues with turbine supply. Thus if we go by current reports - will be completed for IN .The final 2 will be completed in India

Thus this is part of the reason why all 4 isn't being built in india. The other reason is that All order books are full. (on the bright side we will be getting 4 frigates in quick succession)

Now Has this being officially confirmed? as such reports are going the rounds for a long time!

Also is to be noted that follow on Shivalik Class P17A design is been finalized and start of the steel cutting at the end of this year and a Total of 7 hulls have been sanctioned

So in the end ppl, there are Plenty so see in the future for the IN

We can not build as cheap as russia at current stage. Russia may be giving some technologies and instead they may be wanting to build 2 ships at their facility at a very cost effective rate.

bro our own Shivalik class frigate costs less that 500Million a piece... we're paying 1 billion for a Frigate !!! wat's this ??

I think IN is missing the trick here...Goa had experience in the building saryu class opv....why not allow it to modify the design and build armed version with Brahmos and brarak 8?
And order 10 of em for the same amount!! Considering saryu class ships are 92 million $ each!!
This is utter waste of money!!
Even kamotra based frigate offered for phillipines navy would be good enough...numbers are the key!!
And range of saryu class ships is 6000kms!!

I do not know but new frigates will be much more deadlier in fire power and probably a loads of weapon will come with them.

No bro... it's going to be the same as Talwar class frigates... and there're 2 frigates which were build and left in Russian yards because Ukraine no longer provide russia with Engines... they'll transfer those ships to India and India has to get the engine from Ukraine... and as for as i know Ukraine already agreed to provide the Engines for India. and the rest of the 2 shilps will be build by GSL.. Shivalik has more space than talwar to pack a punch.. I don't knoow what's up with the Navy after the change of Admiral.

Follow on P17A frigates (follow on shivalik class) of which 7 are planned! they design is almost complete and steel cutting end of this year

That's good to know... then why waste huge money on just 4 Ships??? If they want more talwars then get those 2 in Russia, which can be added to the navy in short time.. and spend the rest of the 2 billions on additional P-17a or for the subs
