India to order 42 more Sukhoi fighters

NEW DELHI: India is all set to order another 42 Sukhoi-30MKIs, to add to the 230 such "air dominance'' fighter jets already contracted from Russia, at a cost of Rs 20,107 crore.

Defence minister A K Antony on Monday said the 42 new multi-role Sukhois, which will be built at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, are slated for delivery during 2014-2018.

As first reported by TOI, with both China and Pakistan bolstering their air combat fleets, IAF had asked for the additional 42 Sukhois in order to be prepared for any contingency on both the eastern and western fronts.

Having inducted over 110 of the 230 original Sukhois, contracted from Russia in three deals worth upwards of $8.5 billion, IAF has already begun to base these jets in the North-East in a clear move to counter China's rapid modernisation of its armed forces.

Incidentally, HAL has been directed to complete the manufacture of 140 of these 230 Sukhois under transfer of technology by 2015 at all costs.

IAF's combat capability will revolve around the Sukhois, the most potent fourth-generation fighters in its inventory at present, for the foreseeable future.

After Pune and Bareilly, IAF has already earmarked airbases like Tezpur and Chabua in Assam, Halwara (Punjab) and Jodhpur (Rajasthan) as the new airbases to house two Sukhoi squadrons each.

The first lot of the 126 multi-role combat aircraft to be procured under the mammoth $10.4-billion project -- IAF has now submitted its techincal evaluation report of the six foreign fighters in contention -- will begin to touch down in India only by 2013-2014 at the earliest.

Bad reporting

originally 50 Su were bought from Russia in 1996
In 2000 a deal was signed to licence build another 140 in India taking total to 190
In 2007 another 40 were ordered..taking total to 230
two of these fighter were lost in these years .
Hence in 2010 another deal is signed to procure 42 MKI from Russia not HAL ..hence total no will be 270 and not 330.

The ministry of defence (MoD), after announcing the purchase of 250 Sukhois in 2007, ordered 40 more last year, and now a recent purchase of 40, has made the number 330, which would join the service by 2018. Two more aircraft replaced the two Sukhois which crashed last year in April and November. This makes Sukhois the single largest type of aircraft in the IAF’s inventor.

Not sure if its bad reporting -- but it is confusing...

It seems that in addition of 42 MKI....center again cleared 40 MKI's....you will notice that there has been a considerable price difference between what 42 MKI was worth for and 40 MKI's are worth for ! Leads me to believe both are seperate...but then maybe not.

That is why I said these are examples of bad reporting..

First of all after 2007 deal total no of Su ordered was 230(50+140+40) and not 250...before 2007 deal the No. on order was only 190..they seem to have counted 2007 deal twice.

So when MOD cleared the purchase of 42 Su in 2010 ..the total no of Su will come to 272(-2 crashed).

If an additional order of 40 more MKIs is indeed cleared(as we would all like to believe) then total no will become 50+140+ 40+42 +40= 312(-2 crashed) and not 330 as reported in the article.

Guys .....lets just leave the numbers confusion and talk about the AESA part and Brahmos integration.
