Operation Swift Retort which Pakistan carried out on 27 February 2019, was a historic event that demonstrated the country's military might and strategic judgment. As part of a larger escalation between India and Pakistan the Indian Air Force IAF launched an airstrike in Balakot, Pakistan, on February 26, 2019 prompting this operation. Claiming to target terrorist camps the IAF had into Pakistani airspace and dropped bombs in the Jabba neighborhood of Balakot. But, the operation was widely denounced as a pre-election political ploy by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During this standoff General Syed Asim Munir then serving as the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence DG ISI played a crucial role in Pakistan's strategic decision-making process. Asim Munir who later became the Chief of Army Staff COAS in November 2022 was instrumental in coordinating intelligence efforts to counter Indian aggression. Operation involved the Pakistan Air Force PAF conducting airstrikes in Indian-administered Kashmir targeting military installations without causing civilian casualties. The goal of this response was to show off Pakistan's military might without escalating the situation. Pakistan claimed to have shot down two Indian jets in the ensuing duel detaining one pilot Abhinandan Varthaman who was later freed as a goodwill gesture. The Pakistan Armed Forces' spokesperson, Lt. Gen. Asif Ghafoor, who was the Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) at the time, was able to effectively convey the military's goals and activities to audiences both domestically and abroad.

An important turning point in Pakistan military history was Operation Swift Retort which demonstrated the capacity to counter attack successfully while preserving strategic equilibrium. Operation demonstrated Pakistan dedication to peace as well as professionalism and tenacity of its military. The decision to free the Indian pilot who had been detained was viewed as a mature and goodwill move garnering Pakistan international praise for its diplomatic skills. Under the direction of General Asim Munir the operation also highlighted the vital role that intelligence services play in assisting military operations with the DG ISI playing a key role in this respect. Lessons learned from Operation Swift Retort which emphasize value of strategic decision-making effective communication and significance of intelligence in protecting national sovereignty are still applicable as Pakistan faces ongoing security problems. Operation demonstrates Pakistan's military's tenacity and prowess as well as its dedication to preserving regional peace and stability.

Former Indian Railway Minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claims that "India lost a MiG-21 and a captain, but no Pakistani fighter jets or personal casualties in the year 2019 Balakot airstrikes." Indian Air Force IAF launched airstrikes against terrorist camps affiliated with the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group in Balakot Pakistan, on 26 February 2019.

Opposition lawmakers who have questioned the Indian government's claims of demolishing terrorist camps and killing hundreds of militants, shares doubts by Chowdhury about the efficacy of the Balakot strikes. These politicians have cited reports from the world media that indicate there has been little damage and no notable casualties in Balakot. The Indian government however, insists that the attacks were effective in destroying terrorist infrastructure.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shot down an Indian MiG-21 Bison in the ensuing aerial encounter on February 27, 2019, taking Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman the aircraft's pilot into custody. The assertion that India shot down a Pakistani F-16 was refuted by Pakistani intelligence sources worldwide however the country admitted the loss of one MiG-21. With both nations blaming one another of aggression the episode brought to light the tensions between India and Pakistan.
