You need to calm down. No one is saying that either side is weak or invincible.
In every situation, the players gauge the opponent's strength of commitment.

Syria and Iran were not Russia's "core interest" so the West pushed it as far as possible.
Similarly, Ukraine is not America's "core interest", so Russia knows it can go up to a point without opposition.

The idea was Kerry himself in public when the reporter asked what they can do about it when chemical weapons were used in Syria. The Russians pounced on that idea in hopes of getting Syria not being bombed. Its a well known fact.

I didn't use the word "scared". I wrote that Syria and Iran were not sufficient core interests for Russia to take on the West. Every course of action has costs associated with it.

EU and NATO expansion has been pushing Russia into a corner. Ukraine was a buffer and since the democratically elected government fell to violent anti-Russian extremest Russia finally drew the real 'red line'. It's a clear message to NATO and the EU to stay back. Russia also does not recognize the current government, troops entering Ukraine is clear disrespect to the current Ukrainian government, which is nothing more then a door mat right now.

That is also what I am saying, that Russia will not tolerate encroachment in its corner.

The whole idea of a superpower is to make sure the action happens in the other guy's corner, away from your own home.

No one respects or fears the Yankees anymore. Their entire empire is on the verge of a Soviet style collapse as their economy is running on $1 trillion QE and 0% interest rates and can barely grow even with such massive stimulus. Their middle class is shrinking and the debt is staggeringly high. Not to mention that their Labour Force Participation Rate is at all time lows. Their empire is being propped up with $1 trillion QE and 0% interest rates.
