16 Bangladesh nationals wounded by BSF fire at Jaintapur Haor; BSF troops dig bunker within Bangladesh territory at Protappur, Sonarhat border

Sylhet, Mar 14 (UNB) - At least 16 Bangladesh nationals were wounded in Indian BSF fire at Dibir Haor of Jaintapur border on Sunday afternoon prompting retaliation from BDR when both sides traded more than 1000 gunshots.

The trouble began at about 3pm when BSF opened indiscriminate fire upon Bangladeshi nationals fishing in Dibir Haor leaving 16 people wounded.

Rafiq Mia, Monir Hossain, Matin Mia, Abdur Rahman, Abdur Rahim, Ram Biswas, Akter Hossain, Sumon, Abul Kalam, Russel, Kabir, Rahman, Masuk, Abdul Hashim and Akkel Ali with bullet wounds and septuagenarian Solaiman with missile wounds were admitted to Jaintapur Hospital.

In Dhaka, BDR chief Major General Mainul Islam expressed regret at BSF initiating the firing leaving Bangladeshi nationals wounded at Dibir Haor. “I’ve talked with the BSF chief of Meghalaya and the firing was stopped immediately,” he told UNB.

Gen Mainul who returned home on Saturday after meeting his Indian counterpart in New Delhi said they have decided to maintain the status quo on lands of adverse possession until the Joint Border Working Group of both the countries finalizes border demarcation. The Working Group is expected to meet next month.

“The situation flared up again in Dibir Haor is regrettable,” he said. “It might be the decision of the Delhi meeting to maintain the status quo has not yet been percolated to the BSF field officials.”

Asked about the BSF digging bunkers within 150 yards of Bangladesh territory at Protapur and Sonarhat border of Goainghat upazila, the BDR chief said BSF withdrew from the bunker and returned to the territory following flag meeting on Saturday.

General Mainul stressed the need for early solution of the border problems through the Joining Border Working Group.

UNB Sylhet correspondent reports that villagers and BDR said BSF intruded into Dibir Haor at about 10 am and hoisted red flag within 150 yards of Bangladesh territory. BDR asked them to withdraw but BSF declined. But finally they withdrew after 20 minutes following an altercation.

At about noon, a large number of Indian nationals backed by BSF again intruded into Dibir Haor and started fishing. Bangladesh nationals also went for fishing leading to fist fight, chase and counter chase.

At one stage, BSF opened indiscriminate fire on Bangladeshi nationals leaving 16 wounded.
BDR returned the fire that continued for more than hour.

At Protapur and Sonarhat border in Goainghat border, 10 to 15km north-south of Dibir Haor, Indian BSF have taken an aggressive posture since the morning. They have dug about 20 bunkers within Bangladesh territory and taken position with guns aiming at the villagers. Heavy guns and troops have been mobilized in and around the bunkers creating panic among the villagers who have started leaving homes in fear.

Deputy commander of 21 BDR battalion Major Abdullah Al Mamoon confirming the situation said they have returned the BSF fire at Dibir Haor. BSF have trespassed and dug bunkers within Bangdesh land at Protapur and Sonharhat border provoking clashes.

On question of protecting the territory the BDR official said they were trying to avoid clash with BSF and pursue them to leave through discussion.

He admitted that BSF have been showing an aggressive posture along the Sylhet border for the last six weeks.

As it seem bd accepted bharatis dictation. BDR has become weak and disarray. It lost the will to fight for the nation. If this continue than sylhet will be seize to exist. It will be up to the people to get ready to give life for defending the nation.

Dont you think its time to mibilise private groups against these sitting ducks in these bunkers

Yes it's time to create awareness. Mujahideen should be ready if situation deteriorate .

@ Jana
Current BDR chief Major General Mainul Islam is originally from indian west bengal. He was install as BDR chief after last year massacre.

Awami League govt even put new restrictionnot that BDR can fire without higher authority permission. This way indian BSF can do whatever they want with impunity.

Now you can see how indians and Awami league govt working togather to make indian agression possible.

India, Bangladesh security forces trade fire in Meghalaya

The Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on Sunday traded gunfire in Muktapur sector along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, officials in Shillong said.

The incident of firing, the fourth within a fortnight, started around 1.45 pm and lasted for nearly half an hour, Prithvi Raj, Inspector of the BSF in Assam-Meghalaya said.

He said the BDR had resorted to fresh "unprovoked firing" to scare away Indian villagers engaged in fishing in a swamp area in Birkympleng in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills district.

Muktapur is about 20 km east of Pyrdiwah village, which was occupied by the BDR in 2001 for days, claiming it to be a part of Bangladesh, before they were forced to retreat.

On February 4 and February 14, BDR troops fired at the BSF along the India-Bangladesh border at Muktapur.

Earlier, some BDR personnel intruded into India. One was detained but was handed over to the BDR after a flag meeting.

In the just concluded BSF-BDR border conference in New Delhi, BSF chief Raman Srivastava had raised serious concern over intermittent firing by BDR forces along the border in Meghalaya.

Major-General Mainul Islam, director general of the BDR, however, said: "We (India and Bangladesh) should not be upset with such issues (firing)."

Meanwhile, panic-striken border villagers in Meghalaya have shifted to safer grounds following Sunday's gunfire.

"The situation is tense. Most of the people, especially women and children, have moved to safer grounds after the gunfire," Manoj Manar, Muktapur village chief said.

On Friday, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram decided to send Joint Secretary in Home Affairs Sada Khan to assess the situation in Muktapur after Meghalaya Revenue Minister R C Laloo apprised him of the tension along the border.

Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltration.

According to official records, 551.8 acres of Bangladeshi land is in possession of India, while 226.81 acres of Indian land is in possession of Bangladesh. All these areas are disputed.

Looks like BD needs some assitance from China :china:

Hasina will be visiting china soon. She will be signing 3 agreement including building deep sea port. Perhaps this aggression has something to do with recent foreign policy maneuver by AL government.

I don't think these are the same incidents. Meghalaya is quite some distance away from Sylhet. I think these are 2 seperate incidents.

I would not call Hasina visit or publicized proposed agreement done deal until these are signed and there is some actual movement. Just agreemnt mean nothing until there is action.

On the other hand Awami League govt is ending army chief to india same time Hasina is goint to China. This sends wrong signal to Chinese and will not be lost in Chinese view.

As long as indian stooges are entrenched in Bangladesh govt, politics and even in armed forces, we will see conflict and contardiction.

BDR needs to change its policy from "not shooting until shoot upon" to "shoot at sight".

16 Bangladeshis injured in Bangladeshi territory is totally unacceptable  .Its time BDR regain its old face,i.e. of the 2001 incident.

On one hand they talk of peace in the top level and in reality we see BSF is digging 25 bunkers inside BD territory forecfully.

Bunch of HYPOCRITES!

Example of BSF's Hypocrisy..

No more killing of 'innocent' by BSF
Assures India at talks of 2 border forces in Delhi

No more killing of 'innocent' by BSF

And then we see this:

15 hurt as BSF opens fire at villagers

BSF digs 25 bunkers inside Bangladesh
Retreats after 19 hours following border talks

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet

Indian Border Security Force dug 25 bunkers following an overnight intrusion into Bangladesh territory through Padua-Protappur border in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet and retreated yesterday afternoon after 19 hours.

The BSF's retreat from about 100-yard inside the international border came after an emergency flag meeting with Bangladesh Rifles from 1:30pm to 3:30pm on 'no man's land' at Padua-Protappur amidst tension prevailing since Friday night.

Lt Colonel Zahirul Alam, commanding officer of 21 Battalion of BDR, Sylhet, who led the BDR team at the meeting, told The Daily Star at 5:40pm yesterday, "BSF started retreating from the position they took inside Bangladesh territory on Friday. They had already left the bunkers."

BSF commanding officer of Battalion-1, Shillong, S Shekhor led the Indian side at the meeting.

A sector commander-level flag meeting between the BDR and BSF would be held soon to settle the ongoing trouble on Jaintapur, Tamabil and Padua borders, Zahirul said.

Earlier, around 9:00pm on Friday BSF trespassed into Bangladesh territory through border pillars No 1270 and 1271 and dug 25 bunkers while BDR took position in the nearby area and dug eight bunkers.

"We raised strong protests in the meeting and asked them to retreat to their previous position in line with the decision taken in September 2009", said Zahirul Alam adding that the BSF agreed to leave.

Colonel Alam also said that according to a joint decision taken in September 2009, the BSF and BDR had kept themselves at a distance of 200 yards from Padua-Protappur border.

Meanwhile, BDR on Thursday handed over an Indian to BSF, who intruded into Bangladesh through Padua border on the previous day. The BSF also returned a Bangladeshi, held by them from zero line along the same border the same day.

I totally failed to understand bharatis motive here. They have a extra pro bharati government in dhaka yet literally taking the steps to deteriorate bharat-Bangladesh relation.

I would understand if BNP-Jamat was in power. I just don't get. :undecided:
