China sends sixth naval escort flotilla to Gulf of Aden
( Source: Xinhua ) 2010-July-1 06:25

ZHANJIANG, Guangdong, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's sixth naval escort flotilla departed Wednesday for the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters.

The flotilla with more than 1,000 personnel, including Navy special forces troops, is to relieve the fifth flotilla, which has been cruising the waters off the Somalia coast for more than three months.

The amphibious landing ship Kunlunshan, destroyer Lanzhou, and supply ship Weishanhu of the fifth fleet, will escort vessels sailing through the region.

It is the first deployment of the amphibious landing ship Kunlunshan, with a displacement of 18,500 tonnes, on an escort mission.

The previous five Chinese fleets to the Gulf of Aden have escorted 2,248 Chinese and foreign ships in 213 batches in this region, which has been plagued by pirate attacks, since December 2008.

.
How many ships are on operation this time? I can only see one type 52C.

. . . .
What is its displacement? How many vehicles (tanks, amphibious etc), choppers and troops it can carry? How many built?

. . .
But for pirates one don't need LPD. Also, India offered to escort chinese ships in that area as Indian Navy have escorted about 1000 ships in that area, including large number of chinese ships.

.
Any specific reason for LPD in anti-piracy mission? Is china testing the waters for hot pursuit of pirates on land?

not quite true, while not likely, if 10 pirates hold a ship hostage and decides to fight, the LPD with its medium helicopter can deploy 20 fully arm soilders vs 4 for the z-9. also it has greater sensor range due to larger size of the helicopters

oh and expirence also helps

and india can continue escorting ships, tens of thousands pass through there pass year so 1000 ships served is nothing, the day that india sends a 400 ship fortilla to pacify the area is the day that china will accept indias "protection" offer

LPD can handle pirate operations. It can carry more smaller boats and helicopters and more rooms for armed troops.

It's also a test for blue water operation suitability of the ship.
