China Automobile Sector reaches 28 million units sales in 2016, or 14% higher than 2015

The China automobile sector reaches 28 million units sales in 2016, or 14% higher than 2015.

Key highlights:
- Passenger vehicles sales reaches 24.4 million units, 15% higher than 2015
- Commercial vehicles sales reaches 3.7 million units, 6% higher than 2015
- Electric vehicles (EV) reaches half million units sales, a 53% growth. China remains as Top EV market.
- Share of Chinese brand cars in the domestic market reaches 43.2%; the same ratio in 2015 was 41%.

28 million units sales is a huge number. This is even larger than the combination of sales in US, Japan, and Germany. So I think this news deserves a separate thread for discussion and celebration.

China auto sales hit record high in 2016

2017-01-13 08:56

Xinhua Editor: Gu Liping

China's auto sales reached a record high of 28.03 million in 2016, up 13.7 percent year on year, boosted by favorable purchase tax policies on smaller cars.

The growth rate marks the highest since 2013, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in an online statement.

Total output also hit an all-time high, jumping 14.5 percent from one year earlier to 28.12 million units.

Some 3.06 million vehicles were sold in December, up 9.5 percent year on year. The growth rate slowed from a 16.6-percent increase in November.

Chinese auto sales growth peaked at 45 percent in 2009 and has fallen steadily as cities try to control smog and congestion by limiting new vehicles on the roads.

Last year's boom was largely due to the favorable purchase tax policies, according to the statement.

In October 2015, the government slashed the purchase tax on small cars by half to 5 percent. The tax break was applicable to cars with engine displacement of 1.6 liters or less and was in effect between October 2015 and the end of 2016.

Last year, new energy vehicles remained popular among Chinese consumers, with sales surging 53 percent year on year to 507,000 vehicles.

Sales of pure electric vehicles surged 65.1 percent year on year to 409,000 units, accounting for 80 percent of new energy vehicle sales.

China, the world's largest auto market, exported 708,000 vehicles last year. The figure is expected to reach 750,000 this year, up 5 percent year on year.

However, China's auto imports will continue to drop in 2017, falling to around 1 million units.

The association also predicted that auto sales would expand by 5 percent to 29.4 million this year.

Such a small inventory. Shows that Chinese companies adopt lean production techniques quite successfully.

Besides, the government will continue to attract citizen criticism for weather quality conditions while the citizenry is in no mind of quitting private car ownership in favor of mass transportation. :D

Poor government of China :hitwall:

it seems oil will finish soon

Well that's what oil sellers have been saying for decades. Whether it's real or not, China stockpiling oil for strategic purpose only, a chest for war time economy, when war machines and outbound logistics still run on oil. If the oil sellers speak honesty, even better, oil becomes a good non-financial reserve asset. For domestic transport, oil is becoming less of a concern, since for the sake of environment China is going EV, going green.

The government has given a tough "Make EV or Die" order to automakers, has pushed SGCC (and other grid guys, SOE or private) to build charging stations, has waived registration fees (that's one big subsidy) for EV buyers. Immediate results are already promising, China is the largest EV market now, buses across the nation are going green at full speed, Shanghai tops all world cities in EV ownership. In fact the overall economic/financial package for transport sector alone is just massive, going green will only accelerate in the long run.

I made a quick analysis to show the relationship between car consumption vs. GDP per capita.

Surprisingly, from the car sales perspective, China's GDP figure seems to be greatly UNDERESTIMATED, which maybe a shocking news to Gordon Chang and his followers.

sirs, any thoughts?

You mean comparison after converting LCU to dollar, so perhaps currency manipulation?

Also, with an invented/improved formula GDP is a compiled statistic of other statistics, hardly accurate, let alone its inability to track off-grid activities. Since it's never accurate, all politicians love it, which can be tailored for specific agenda e.g. climate talk, MFN trade status, cost sharing in international organisations, or just electioneering at home to rally political support. In reality rational decisions, say those made by automakers, are made ignoring bull crap GDP data published by governments, cos when it comes to real money everyone will be serious.
