PDF Thread Quality Control

Can accomodate this concern by having one section where anyone can post no matter the number of posts made etc...but keep the post limit criteria for the bulk of the forum (as far as thread starting goes etc).

Another idea is a time limit enforced between starting new threads or even replies depending on your post count.

What do you think about this approach @smuhs1 @The Sandman @Technogaianist @war&peace @cloud4000

Let me tag some more members too:

@Levina @anant_s @PARIKRAMA @Providence @Vergennes @Taygibay @LA se Karachi @Bilal9 @Joe Shearer
@RAMPAGE @django @Zibago @Windjammer @Zarvan @nair

I dont think that will serve the purpose. The problem will remain there as new posters will be allowed to post material on PDF. The proposed the idea of imposing a restriction because i basically want nonsense threads being opened again and again. The main point being that every new member start opening thread likes

How many Jf Thunder we have got?

Can Pakistan get aircraft carrier?

Pakistan will soon destroy India with quotes of Zaid Hamid?

The main aim for this practice is for new members to watch and learn what kind of material is being posted by senior members.

This the perfect example of why there needs to be some sort of control. I mean what is the purpose of posting random news one after the other?

Oh, poor Zarvan would be out of the job:D. What really needs to be crimped are those damn wish lists.

Pakistan needs three Borg Cubes:

The entire United States Navy:

And the freaking Moon to counter just the Indian Navy... don't even get me started on what they'd need to counter the IAF too!!

These misinformed wish lists need to stop, or at very least people need to explain and analyze why the wished for items would make sense, how they'd fit into Pakistan's doctrine or how the doctrine could be changed to support them, where the items would be sources from, supported and what support infrastructure Pakistan has that could accommodate them, and how the heck Pakistan could pay for the items. Among other considerations.

If you can't do that in a manner that would make a defense industry Pro like me smile, get the heck out with your wish lists!!

I for one welcome our inevitable Norwegian overlord. Can I be head-henchman no. 1? :D

I've already tabbed myself as both Supreme Overlord and minions 1 through 9648.

But there's an opening for peon 3 if you're interested. Please sign the attached form and mail it to me.

Heh, university of waterloo....I always suspected something evil lurked within that edifice. I never trusted people that focused on Maths too much :P

a time limit enforced between starting new threads

Yes a simple time limit enforced between starting new threads (say one every hour/two hours) is the first rule that will get some results - and for new members only. People will think longer before posting garbage threads and troll-bait threads.

We can enforce further rules for older habitual trolls - meaning three strikes, you get back to 'new members' status.

I think we can go back and archive anything older than a year. If PDF mods feel that will save a few bucks and improve the speed and decrease latency of searches etc. However I'm no cloud infrastructure expert.

70% or more of whats posted here is garbage, and trolling..and there are only few good posters here.
You cannt blame Management here,as they are not here to run a charity, its business at the end of the day,its always a balance between revenue and quality and both are inversely proportional to each other.

Been here for some years, reasonably active member, I think this forum is doing just fine in its current form. This is not a round table conference of UN where every participant is expected to be dead serious, with three wrinkles on their foreheads, and discussing matters of life and death. Some amount of loose talk, banter, nonsense, etc. are fine and keep the forum lively, but yes, too much of nonsense, abuse and personal insult should be curbed, and it is always being curbed.

On a couple of points, there are already post limits for opening threads/posting links, raising the limits further will compel new members to post more nonsense to reach that post count, and bar some potentially good threads from getting open. People generally ignore trash threads anyway.

Limiting number of new threads in an hour or day will also cause problem for many members, for me, I sometimes open 2-3 threads at one go on Sundays, because I may not get time on weekdays, and that should be fine as long as the threads are good.

Good points @smuhs1

We can have one more thing, if quality of thread is found to be not in compliance with minimum set standards of forum, the thread gets deleted. Further, for every such thread deleted, a penalty of say 5 post count can be put, which will discourage users to post irrelevant threads.
Similarly if a good quality thread (Featured threads / Positive Ratings etc), post count may be increased by some number, putting an incentive on members to take care of quality of information.

Third, i suppose we have a universally accepted policy of Zero tolerance on Racism and Women harassment (as these issues are above and beyond nationality) on forum. Violation on these counts should lead to Strict bans.

Thanks for the tag

On sensitive threads there should be a restriction on comments by serial offenders even if they are elite members

Its not that easy..

There are two actual challenge
1. Its of course quality control
2. Signup particularly new if we nip the bud, the traffic flow will decrease as well..

If you see certain time stupid and really dumb topics and silly war mongering attracts a 10-15 page thread over just couple of hours where emotions run amok, the choicest of abuses, pot shots, ridicule and meme run free.. its in a way a place to let go off the steam...

Unfortunately this is now in every section instead of say a single section which we can term or name as "Latest happenings"

This latest happening should be the place all new account signed up folks are allowed to spam, troll and do the nonsense.. pick the ones sane among them and give access..

Post count is useless, getting endorsement based on posts quality can be useful.

For example imagine a simple scenario
10 mods and senior mods
30 TTA and TTC
  • a new account sign up need endorsement from minimum 3 mod or senior mod team or minimum 9 TTA+TTC a ratio of 1:3 enabling him/her to post in all sections like Indian defence or Chinese defence or Central and south Asia etc
  • a new account holder with 2 mods and 5 TTA+TTC all from Pakistan can allow the user to post in Pakistan section from defence to siasat part...
  • a account holder with 5 moderator and 15 TTA/TTC should get access to senior section which is meant to be for serious discussion
  • A single mod and 3 TTA/TTC endorsement gets you access to sports , photography, other general portions...
  • Its basically unless you get endorsed from a mod/multiple TTA/TTC from different countries you dont get access into that section.. a responsibility on the poster as well on the title holders.
  • An example uptill you get endorsed by 2-3 Indian TTAs the account holder is barred from posting there..
  • Hue and cry will be there but its a common practice for all section. I myself if i dont get endorsed by Chinese TTA/Mods i dont get access to chinese section unless being title holders we are allowed to cross access and post..
You get what i am saying, its so radical that most of the account holders wont qualify unless they strive on what the forum management wishes to achieve.. quality, control, temperament and promotion based on merit .. etc

Now the goal of mgmt has to be clear here.. do they wish a place for all the crowd or they wish to project a place for all intellectuals and others to develop that aspect also to come , participate and discuss all POVs.

ATM sorry to say its not.. the site, the vision, and the participants are not in sync.. its my observation for last 2 yr 9 months plus.. Relatively young as compared to many folks where avg they have been here for 5-7+ years here... I am vehemently annoyed with FB and twitter handles of this site as well.. Its simply wasting the platform and its potential..

Only webby can tell us what he wishes as part of his vision along with staff of mod/senior mods.. May be then we can align the strategy..

The only "merit" that will be achieved is to create all new members in their own image. Is that really what you would like, Sir?

I have recently been seeing a lot of useless threads on PDF with no logic to support them. I propose that the post limit for opening a new thread should be around 500-1000 posts.

Fully agreed in principle but it's gonna get awfully quiet in here
as enrolment dwindles : most people aren't that patient.

In order to fulfil the requirement of minimum words.
Words, Aether? I'm under the impression you're discussing a different
problem than smuhs1 who was on about post count, not word count?

I'm in a bit of a hurry but I'll go for a different section for threads by those
with posts between minimum for thread creation and minimum wits?
You could open a thread only in the Noobs café and that keeps simplistic
question's threads off the main site indeed and mods can early-detect trolls
in that kindergarten section.

In the main site itself, 1 main news thread per nation would be a fine idea IMHoO.
Mods can just drop OPs in it when info has value and delete the rest.
If an admin-type person monitors it to keep it info bits only, it would be rather clean.

GTG, g'dday all, Tay.

.

I think most trolls dont survive past 500 posts anyway so its either quantity or quality.
