Russia's defence pact with Pak shows Modi govt's diplomacy failure

I don't think this has anything to do with Modi's diplomatic failure. There are two primary reasons for this-

1. Russia sees itself in the role of a nation that defies the prevailing world order. In this regard, it wants to get closer to nations that might be willing to support Russia's actions even when they are not in accordance with what the rest of the world sees as fair. In Pakistan, Russia might find a partner willing to overlook several indiscretions in other parts of the world in return for military and economic cooperation. India can no longer afford to take that position.

2. American influence in Pakistan is anticipated to decline sharply in the coming year, and Russia see a convenient vacuum it wants to fill.

In terms of arming Pakistan, what happens will depend on how the Indian economy does. If India can generate $3-4 billion dollars annually in procurement and joint development with Russia in the next few years, and if that expenditure comes with the rider that Pakistan cannot be engaged beyond a point, defence cooperation with Pakistan will not take off.

We need to watch Putin's visit to India in December- I have a feeling Modi will go all out to woo him.

Well I never expected Russia to go this far to show India a middle finger. I guess it makes sense. Russia was used to dominating Indian market with its defence exports and influence in New Delhi. But India is rising up and Russia will take time to adjust.

Its okay Russia take your time. We can wait. In my view there are many reasons why Russia is a little offended.

1. Russian dominance in Indian market is being challenged by west and Indian companies, which they are not used to.

2. The new defence policy gives preference to Made in India with offset contracts and ToT. Recently Russia refused to share ToT of their crappy ammunition. Clearly, there have no regard for Indian industrial ambitions.

3. In the Indian artillery program, Russian vendor was asked to compete with the Indian company L&T and it looks like L&T is winning the contract. Russia is not used to this sort of treatment in New Delhi. After decades of being the single vendor supplier, this new policy is not easily digested in Moscow.

4. Russia still thinks it a superpower. Yes it is a oil and gas superpower and India needs Russia more than Russia needs India in the 21st century. But, India is now aiming to be an industrial power and will only deal with countries that respectfully abide by Indian policies.

Pakistan doesn't have much to offer to Russia. Yeah you can go and build a few power plants here and there in Pakistan, but you will have stiff competition from China. China's influence in Pakistani political circles is too high. China is to Pakistan what Russia used to be to India. It's a single vendor supplier to Pakistan and won't like Russia indulging.

What are you suggesting? Improvement of relation between Russia and Pakistan is going to be the end of the world? I'm amazed by the Indian comments in this thread. They are laughable to say the least. On the one hand, some Indians are claiming that this relationship is insignificant and meaningless. India has supposedly better relations with Russia. On the other hand, some Indians are claiming 360 degree to the opposite that this relationship is dangerous not only for India, but the entire world. What a level of confusion and contradiction. Make up your mind man. You don't seem very united in your opinions.

I m seeing it from a different perspective and that's how it should be......
We should consider it from all angle b4 agreeing to a particular stance.....
I agree with his points also that it won't affect India bcuz India has got other options.....but when I see it from a global perspective......I see a regional front forming in Asia to take on the US.......And it doesn't take a genius to understand the implications.......

Fanboy russia-pakitan relations are not Even 1% if you compare it with India.Pakistan-russian relations are Not even reached Level as china-indian Relations Peace.

This is only some newspaper going over the top. As India is buying from many sources, so is Russia selling to Pakistan. There is nothing big, unless they make some big sales. Pakistan does not have finance to make it big, so chill.

Pakistan can never match India's buying capacity....because of smaller economy as well as size..their requirements will always be small. Now if somebody decides to sell £10 million and ignoring a customer worth £100 million..well that is the sellers blunder not the buyers.
What are India's option .... buy from other countries...and there is a long list of them. But what will Russia have to do...find potential customers with buying power of India. Furthermore...Russians will have competition from cheaper copied Chinese versions of their product in the market. So overall in this deal Russia did a blunder....if Putin thinks it will intimidate well he might be completely undermining the Indians.

Just a result of Pakistan and Russia reaching out to each other. Russia has genuine concerns regarding terrorism in the Caucuses , Pakistan is fighting a war against these people, it all makes sense to talk and cooperate.

Pakistan has been so focused on the US and China, it has forgotten other nations.

I read all the post in this thread and want to show Indians something which they don't want to accept and always in denial mode.

1. Economy wise Russia is bigger then India
   
2. Russia is far more superior in terms industrialization
   
3. Russia is bigger country then India in term of area of land
4. Russia is veto power
5. Russia produces its own weapons from basic weapons to advance weapons.
6. Russian export is more then Indian export in high end technology
7. Russia is Space superpower

Bottom line: Don't treat Russia like it is nothing without India and if Russia stop to give you excess to her advance technology now India will be finish in next years in terms high end technology know how and that is some thing west will even offer you. India is bride of west and they will fulfill every demand of her and when time goes on they stop things one by one and by that time Russia will be on Chinese/ Russian block.
