My interaction with them says Iranian public are mostly not much into religion... its their ruling elite.. even they are not much into religion except using it to beat others...
so if you are just a tourist, there wont be any problem.

I am just curious about, what will happen to a guy who is born muslim, but isn't a believer. Blasphemy?

As a retired older American, i.e. not of "spy" age or background, would I be able to move about Iran freely without government minders? Or would I have to be constantly on guard that I might become a hostage or pawn of the Iranian government trying to trade me for something the Iranian government wants from the US government? That is, what if I went camping in the desert could the Iranian government decide to charge me with espionage just so they have a new bargaining chip? It seems extraordinarily dangerous for any American to visit Iran.

no there is no problem for you if you have not any record for working in CIA or same organizations.
there are many Americans who visit Iran every year. even there are some Americans who play basketball in Iranian league.

If you wanna camping in desert, camping somewhere other people do or tours camping there. not going to roam around nowhere in middle of mountains or desert near military or nuclear facilities.

It would be absolutely no problem, people are not that much into religion as you may think. If you tell them you are a Christian, Jew, Hindu or any other religion, they would treat you no different than Muslims. No one asks you what you believe in or what's your religion, unless you are interested to tell them yourself.

I don't know what you have been told about Iran, but it's not like what you think.
There has been cases where some U.S citizens have been arrested, the same happened for Iranian citizens in U.S. It all comes from mistrust and lack of diplomatic relations. But it's not a routine! Many Americans visit Iran every year, and almost all of them come back surprised. I read some American tourist story about Iran visit, he said he couldn't believe Iranians used cars to travel and he expected to see people going out with donkeys and horses! Although it's funny, but it's also a sad reality that how much American public have potential to be extremely misinformed about Iran.
Anyway, here's the story and photos of an American photographer's travel to Iran. I suggest you definitely read it, it has very good info regarding American travels to Iran and also great pictures. He also has a very popular Facebook page.
