The Gawadar Hoax

Pakistan should keep the control in its own hand,no matter who the other party is.That is going to be more beneficial in the long run.Chinese collaboration,JV,access to the port, all fine, but the port, ideally, should not be handed over to any other country.

Back in the 1960s,almost similar thing happened with Pakistan.Back at that time, they handed over many key military installations to the US.US was an unquestionable friend of Pakistan at that time. They helped Pakistan militarily, industrially, the relation went so deep, that at one point of time US interests started superceding the Pakistani interests. We all know how the chain of events followed after that.
Every country has its own agenda, which can never be exactly similar to any other country, they can only match to some extent on some particular point.

Pakistan has to snap out of this habit of piggybacking on someone else, some times US,sometimes Saudis/Arabs sometimes China. They have to stand up for themselves...

Totally agreed sir, China has been nudging us to do just that but we have become accustomed to shouting aid aid aid, when we should be shouting trade trade trade. Although China's intention at first might be for the better but in the end it will result in the loss of our key ally.

Whoever runs Gwadar, whether its Chinese, Pakistanis, or Martians, needs to make sure of one thing: the port must benefit the local indigenous community first. Jobs should be given to the local Baluchis, not to immigrants from other provinces. It has become a sore point with the Baluchis and, if not handled properly, will only cause trouble with the separatist terrorists.

How would that work? Would you allow open discrimination of your citizens on the basis of region? That would only increase animosity and internal divisions... If you do that, then don't complain about balkanization of Pakistan.

Why shouldnt the jobless of the region get jobs instead of ppl frm other provinces? it will bring prosperity to the poor state of Baluchistan.

Oh please with what Baluchistan has gone through I am surprised why there isn't a separate country proposition in the parliament!!!! The Baluchis have been seen as traitors from the beginning no major development has been carried out there. It should have been the other way round ......Gawadar was a ray of hope that was blocked instantly.

No questions about Chinese intentions,no speculations whatsoever..the question is about the habit of expecting others to do the development. It is understandable if there is a technical constraint.Funds may be low, that does not mean that the assets have to be handed over totally, management has to be accordingly done.
Development is important, but so is,dispersion of wealth. With the reins handed over to Chinese companies, the Pakistani contractors will surely take a hit in some way or other.

Not at all. Laws can be enacted to give preference to local residents for jobs.
Only people who have documented evidence of being born or lived in the state for x number of years can qualify.

Such laws are all over the place -- most public colleges charge less fees to in-state students than out-of-state.

I just wanted to start a thread about the future of Gawadar and probably the future of Pak-China relations.

As you all might know how China has decided to take up Pakistan's offer of taking control of Gawadar, we will talk about the change there would be in the environment between Pakistan and China. Quite frankly let me put it this way, this is going to be the flash point between Pak and China. Sooner or later China is going to ask more from Pakistan than just Gawadar, being landlocked on it's western side Pakistan acts as a key route for trade. They are going to put the case in front that they had helped Pakistan build Gawadar, they are running Gawadar, Gawadar is almost like a satellite state of China for trading then why don't you just give it up and take some land from us. This is the best case scenario and I think you can imagine the worst case scenario.

Looking forward to your expert analysis.

The only friend Pakistan has left is China. Now dont screw this friendship up. Pakistan is already isolated in the world, how much more isolated you want Pakistan to get.

Let China use Gwadar to transport its resources to its western provinces. The more work happens in Gwadar, the better for Pakistan. There is no point building a port and letting it rust under the hot sun like its doing now. Then why build the port in the first place.

If Pakistanis really think like you, then I think Pakistan doesn't deserve a friend like China. Go ahead be isolated from the world and the region, if thats what you want. As of today, all our neighbours, except China, hate us. As of today, all countries on eartth, except China, look down at us.

Do you have any example of a country acting this way in the post-colonial period?

I don't see China ever asking this.

China has never interfered in Pakistan's internal issues. Its Pakistan that asked China to take control of Gwadar Port not the other way around.

After U.S. raid on Abbottabad that killed Osama Bin Laden, China said that each nation should respect other nation's sovereignity.

China is the world's largest populated country on earth. If Gwadar Port becomes busy transporting oil and other goods for China, it will be only beneficial for Pakistan and Pakistan's economy. Win-win situation for both Pakistan and China.

As of today, under the control of Singapore Port Authority, Gwadar Port is an utter failure.

To run gawader sucessfully requires strong securities by a third power. Otherwise the sheikh on dubai would keep sending terrorists.

are you an Indian agent, or what, CIA guy?

your intention is evil.

Pakistan's best interest is China runing Gwadar( militarily or in other way), and set up a few Industrial Parks nearby. This could be our economic heart in the future. This is important to the whole nation, including the integrity of our land.

If we don't trust China, who else can we trust?

China even offer to build the Motorway to connect the port with Karachi, and they have the fund to help Pakistan, what, we turn them down, keep them away and fall us down the US-India trap?

it's obvious, no room to discussion.
