Syria knew it was a Turkish jet: intel

Syrian officials were fully aware that a jet their forces downed on June 22 was Turkish as they used the Turkish word for “neighbor” to refer to the aircraft, a Turkish intelligence official has said, according to daily Hürriyet.

Damascus had claimed that officials were unaware of the jet's nationality, but Turkish intelligence units have disputed such reports.

"We have recordings of the Syrian dialogues before and after," a Turkish intelligence officer said. "They refer to our jet as 'komşu' (neighbor). They use the Turkish word, and then they use the Arabic word for plane."

The jet already had its identification, friend or foe (IFF) system turned on, allowing it to be recognized by others, another official added.

"Syrian officials should have automatically known that it was a Turkish jet by looking at their radar system," the official said.

Hostile situation by Turkey ? I don't know wheather you have some comprehension problem or not but It was Turkish radar station warned Turkish aircraft to change own routes and It was the Turkish pilot immedately changed direction within minutes and Same Turkish pilot required assistance from Turkish radar center to warn it to prevent a likely airspace occupation in second turn. The voices and radar ecoes are in the hands of Turkish officials and will be shared with NATO...

It was Syrian side fired a missile and hit it within international waters. Even If The aircraft was inside of your territory, It has to be warned firstly. Firing a missile is the last choice a country can apply. Without shame on themselves, They claimed that They didn't recognize the identity of aircraft and immediately appologized and Suddenly, They claimed that The aircraft was downed with AAA and revealed a fake video to hide the truths (the range aircraft downed) under propaganda.

To mention a hostile move by Turkey, Think twice. We didn't shot Syrian aircraft down. We will just show them the results of their hostile attacks on Turkey so If you aren't an Anti-Turk, Don't feel a pain but just be happy with the situation you are going to see in following days... (I hope) Turkey isn't a banana republic that a sh@thole regime can f@ck with After shot the aircraft down within international waters...

That's the communication style of modern countries. If you talk about a backward dark age regime like Syria and their supporters, You must talk with the language they can comprehend.

How bright the FSA regime would be is another question...

How bright the FSA regime would be is another question...

This is not the question that should be asked right now. After FM of Turkey explained the fact that our plane was shot down in international waters without any pre-warning and 11 minutes later than the violation, Assad regime has to pay for this hostile action against Turkey.

That's right, Assad regime must pay the price, but since this is the beginning of his end, that question must be asked.

99% of countries don't shoot down aircraft that are barely violating territorial airspace. They warn said aircraft or send up other aircraft to force it to land. Not shoot first and ask questions later. it sounds like as well that the flight path was fairly routine

I understand , well aware of the procedure ... The Syrian Govt clearly over reacted ... But still given the hostility between the two countries , it is not surprising ... What amazes me is that F-4 that close to Syrian Airspace and even violated it for few minutes ! What for ? :what:

Of course , Damascus thought of it as a threat ... The path of the F-4 itself was provocative if you look the maps ! Mistake or deliberateness argument is no use since the low level commander controlling the SAM could by no way know the intentions of the intruder ! He did his duty , nothing else ... The current Relations between Turkey and Syria didn't allow him to be lenient ...

NATO to discuss downing of Turkish jet by Syria - Air Force News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Air Force Times
Dogu Ergil, a professor of political science at the Ankara University, told private NTV television that Turkey had repeatedly sent its jets across the Syrian border for several weeks to show its military muscle at the time.

Whats the fuss then ? :azn:

My earlier Post which no one bothered to reply but instead relied on juvenile cartoon posting to prove their point ... I have always considered Turks as sensible and civilized but at the moment they are just being blinded by emotions ...

None of the posters here are anti-Turkiye , just read their posts ! Ankara is our long term ally ... What most are saying that Turkish Govt was at fault in this particular case ...

Here, you may find this interesting:

In the same briefing, Turkey told foreign ambassadors that Syrian air forces had violated the Turkish border five times in recent months but had not been intercepted as these had not been considered “hostile” moves. The Turkish side implemented rules of engagement in these cases but did not respond to them in the way Syria did to the Turkish jet.

Final steps for digging Assad and his supporters into own grave. You digged your own grave with attacking on Turkish aircraft and I hope You will pay it under the missile rain of Turkish AirForce...

I have already been waiting for a surprise night attack with more than 60-70 aircrafts to cut the breath of this backward piç who gave the order of firing this missile towards Turkish aircraft !!!

Clinton condemns Syria for shooting down Turkish jet

(AFP) – 16 hours ago
WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned Syria on Sunday for the "brazen and unacceptable" shooting down of a Turkish fighter jet and vowed to work with Ankara on a suitable response.

"It is yet another reflection of the Syrian authorities' callous disregard for international norms, human life, and peace and security," Clinton said in a written statement.

Clinton said she spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu on Saturday to convey "grave concern" about the downing of a Turkish F-4 fighter jet by Syrian forces.

"I also told him that our thoughts and prayers are with the missing pilots and their loved ones," Clinton said.

"The foreign minister briefed me on the specifics of the incident, including that the Syrian military shot its plane down without warning," she said.

"The United States condemns this brazen and unacceptable act in the strongest possible terms."

President Bashar al-Assad's government said it downed the F-4 Phantom on Friday after the Turkish jet violated Syrian airspace.

NATO has said it will discuss Turkey's accusations, while Britain, another member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has offered support for "robust" international action.
Clinton reaffirmed US support for the Turkish government and American solidarity with the Turkish people.

"We will maintain close contact with Turkish officials as they continue to investigate the incident and determine Turkey's response, including in the Security Council," she said. "We will work with Turkey and other partners to hold the Assad regime accountable."

Turkey-Syria relations have already been strained by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's outspoken condemnation of the Assad's regime's bloody crackdown, which rights activists say has killed more than 15,000 people since March 2011.

"Turkey has been a leader in the international community's effort to address the Syrian regime's violence against its own people," said Clinton.

"We will continue our close cooperation with Turkey as part of our broader efforts to promote a democratic transition in Syria," she said.

"This work is urgent, and we will be consulting in New York with the Security Council, in Brussels with NATO and the EU, and in Geneva with special envoy Kofi Annan on next steps."

Syria general and two colonels 'defect to Turkey'
BBC News - Syria general and two colonels 'defect to Turkey'

More than 33,000 Syrian refugees are estimated to have fled to Turkey since the violence began

Several high-ranking Syrian military figures have defected to Turkey, reports in Turkish media say.

A general, two colonels, two majors and about 30 other soldiers are said to have crossed into Hatay province on Sunday night.

They were part of a group of some 200 people who crossed the border overnight into Monday, Anatolia news agency says.

Tensions between the two countries have escalated over the shooting down by Syria of a Turkish F-4 jet on Friday.

Wreckage
The two pilots were reported missing after their plane went down in the Mediterranean off the Syrian coast.

Syria has insisted the plane was engaged while in its airspace while Turkey insists it was in international airspace, 13 nautical miles from Syria, when it went down.

In a news conference broadcast by Syrian state TV on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said wreckage from the plane's tailgate had been handed over to the Turkish authorities that proved it had been shot down within Syrian waters.

"The Syrian defence forces used an anti-aircraft gun with the longest range of 1.2km. From the tailgate we can confirm the damage was caused by anti-aircraft fire. We didn't use radar for this action."

Syria was committed to good neighbourly relations with Turkey, Mr Makdissi said, adding that if Turkey responded positively, Syria would act accordingly.

The EU, which has urged Turkey to adopt a "restrained response", is to extend its sanctions on Damascus in order to increase pressure on Bashar al-Assad's government.

As the search in the Mediterranean continues for the F-4's two pilots, Turkish media report that their boots have been found, but not their parachutes.

Security
The Turkish cabinet is due to discuss the crisis on Monday, a day before Nato ambassadors in Brussels meet to consider their response.

Ankara has invoked Article 4 of Nato's charter, under which consultations can be requested when an ally feels its security is threatened.

More than 33,000 people have fled into Turkey since Syria's violence began in March 2011.

The latest arrivals came over the border crossing near the town of Reyhanli.

They came with their families and were taken to Apaydin camp a few miles inside the border, Anatolia reports.

The BBC's Jonathan Head in Istanbul says this is one of the biggest single groups of soldiers to defect to Turkey.

There has been a steady trickle of defections from the Syrian armed forces over the past year, most of them to opposition forces fighting inside the country.

So far there is no evidence that they have had a significant impact on the Syrian military's ability to fight, our correspondent says.

Turkey has openly supported the opposition Free Syria Army which is largely made up of defectors.

The Turkish authorities say that 12 Syrian generals have already defected. Last week a Syrian air force pilot was granted political asylum after flying his plane to Jordan.

Turkey did lose end story. AKP thought, lets irritate Assad and lets see how aware they are etc. AKP thinks to much about international law while many other countries violated our own airspace so he thought he could do the same thing agains Syria to.

Man, Syria is at fire and the regime is fully supported by Russians and their are bloody serious, what the heck you still trying to do mister Erdogan?? Or did tell Obama to you to do things like this?

You cant eve go in to the mountains of North-Iraq because uncle US will be mad, but you are doing tough agains Israel and Syria and thinking you are the leader of the Middle-east..

First they give you gas and you feel you are something and then they will do this to you and show the world what kind of bellboy you are :D
